A successful transition to Behn mouthpiece
Author: jbunnin

I just acquired a Brad Behn SONO mouthpiece, after playing for many years on a variety of other excellent mouthpieces, and my experience with the Behn is remarkable, especially with Behn reeds, but across the board with V21 and Rue LePic Vandorens, as well. The tonality, responsiveness, and sheer beauty of the sound are more than I had expected. I know this sounds like a commercial, but it's not: the mouthpiece really is the best I've ever used. To each her or his own, of course; mouthpieces are as idiosyncratic as we clarinetists are. Suffice it to say that i'm very happy.

.........and of course you have found the 'right' ligature that brings out the best of the mouthpiece/reed combination

What kind of tip opening do you use? I know Behn favors smaller tip openings which isn’t really my preference. I love his emphasis on resonance over “darkness” though.

The tip opening is 1.09, and what my ear tells me is that the combination of my clarinet (Backun), barrel (Backun Fat Boy), mouthpiece, and a variety of 3.5 and 4 reeds work very well together. My wife agrees!

Brad is in a very good position to continue making most of his MPs and not being terribly handicapped by the shut-down of Zinner. I suspect the Zinner blanks will be replaced not by a molded JJ Babbit blank, but with custom CNC blanks. This will keep people like Wesley Rice busy!

1.09 opening with an Aria 4? Does it have very thick rails or something? I find the 4 Aria reeds soft compared to a V12 3,5 which is what I use for my Vandoren B40. Which is not a very resistant setup at all.

Fernie,

A. There more to the resistance than the opening and rails.
B. People are comfortable with different strengths. This isn’t weird at all.
C. If the B40 isn’t a very resistant setup (a questionable claim at best), then wouldn’t you expect a fairly middle of the road setup to take a softer reed?
D. Again, why are we talking about reed strengths for different people...?

A. I know there is more to it than that. The rails suggesstion was just a way of me asking what might be the source of higher resistance for a relatively closed mouthpiece.
B. I know this. But there is a general strength that people prefer on specific mouthpieces. Some ARE more comfortable with more resistant setups but they are still high resistance.
C. I was referring to the reed matched. 3,5 V12 is very common. Although some do use higher for something more resistant (supposedly for better projection?)
D. My question is really more focused on how resistant the mouthpiece is when compared to most mouthpieces around the same tip opening (D’addario, Vandoren, Selmer...)
