 Squeal When Play F#/Gb 3
Author: BGBG
Date:   2018-07-18 02:01

Have not played this note for awhile although I know I should try them all out frequently, but I played it today and found a high pitch squeal when press that key. See nothing that looks wrong. Any idea what causes or what to do? Hard to blow and either sounds stuffy or squeals.

I'm not good with numbers. Do you refer to first space F# throat note?

[F#3] Is this the note you are asking about?

Yes...That IS the note. It may squeal due to position of mouthpiece but if not squeal it has a muffled sound. Do not play it often unless need to but am thinking I should play all the notes each time. But I do not know how to clean the hole or adjust the key. It LOOKS and FEELS like it works as always. No obvious faults I can see. Just do not know what to try and thought maybe someone else was familiar.

Assuming that you responded in the affirmative to the image of the third ledger line bellow the staff, perhaps the Right Hand paddle had gotten bent upward off the "crows foot." Hold the clarinet in your left hand and look at the "F/C" pad (not the paddle). Now depress the Left Hand "F#/C#" key with your left pinky. My guess would be that you will notice that the "F/C" pad does NOT go down all the way. Either of the paddle keys for this note (left or right) may have been bent.

Since you have the cork thing going on, I'd just have your tech adjust this at the same time you have the tenon cork fixed. If we're talking now about the right note, it could be an easy fix with a little bending, but it depends on what got bent in the first place. The tech will know.

Not really sure. I COULD have bent something when working with cork but since I do not recall playing the piece that uses this note in awhile and have not played note recently it could have happened anytime. May need a tech to look at it. The cork replacement seems fine. Do not really believe it could be related but do not know for sure what is wrong or how to correct it. Thanks for the suggestions. Need someone who knows to look at it. Do not think I can figure it out.

I'm a little puzzled by the statement that you haven't played the note recently. When I pick up a clarinet I immediately play every note on it to establish that everything works as it should. It takes only a few seconds and prevents surprises.

Keys can easily be bent out of adjustment during normal handling or while in the case. I'd urge you to learn enough about your instrument to know if it is working as it should. You don't necessarily need to know how to fix it, but you should be able to identify what needs fixing. There are plenty of clips on YouTube that explain this in quite simple terms.

OOPS....MY BADDIE ! APOLOGIZE. I see I am going to have to improve my technique. Play every note every time I play to make sure all are OK. Do not have a refined practice procedure but just go through a set of songs I like. Get sloppy when rushed. And I realize now I MAY have stated the wrong note. Have to re-think this. I am not used to looking at keys, seeing how they work, which way they go. I just looked and never realized before some stay open and some stay closed and change when key is pressed. I am more musical than mechanical and now see the importance of inspecting the clarinet and trying every single note every time I play at least one or more times.
What I meant was, I play certain songs and realized the particular note had not been played in a long time, like some notes are used almost every time I play anything. At first I thought it had nothing to do with my cork repair because I did not see how this could affect only one note, so must be some other issue. I am going to call the tech and have someone look at it and be sure before I post anything else about this. Sorry for inconvenience my stupidity has caused.

No inconvenience and no baddie. Remember that there is no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers. If you familiarize yourself with a basic knowledge of how the instrument functions mechanically you'll find that some problems become self-explanatory and even if this is not so you'll at least find it easier to describe the problem to someone else.

I totally agree with 'Tony F,' it's all part of learning.

Which brings up a good point.

Taking some form of lessons should be part of the investment you make in time and money. Even if you have little to no extra money, you could seek out a better student at your school, or other local school to coach you every now and then. This process is even helpful to the coach, so you would be helping them out too!

True Confession: I had always wanted to play a clarinet but thought it would be too difficult and costly. But in at age 77 in May 2014 I rented a clarinet and took 16 lessons then bought a Buffet E-11 on sale in summer. Now just play for my own enjoyment. No formal band or music experience or training although I also have some guitars, banjos, mandolins. Took guitar lessons in high school.
So here I am as a clarinet hobbyist as well. Plenty busy so have not much time.
Called music store today and they have you drop off instrument And state issue, evaluate it and give you estimate. No cost or obligation if decide against. Sounds reasonable. First have to identify the issue though.

OKAY FOLKS: I have got it right now. I checked my fingering with my notes fingering chart and the pitch with my Korg Chromatic CA-1 tuner and found that the note was not as I said but actually the 5th note on my fingering chart which is really a G#3. It has always been good before and it is now. I believe I was mis-fingering it and misread the chart and in reality all is well which pleases me immensely. I was fingering a C#3 with the left hand and the G# with my right hand, and to make it worse when I posted I erroneously picked the wrong note on my chart being in a hurry at the time. NOT a F#3 after all but in reality a G#3. I guess the F# 3 stuck in my mind because I was having trouble fingering it recently.

So I am sorry but the whole thing was a false alarm and totally my fault. Many I am sorry's and I will have to calm down and get my act together. Thanks for the replies though for I always learn something from them.
