 ...essence of clarinet tonality...
Author: erica

Hey,
I'm looking for a really awesome CD that features a clarinet soloist playing something that captures the entire essence of clarinet tonality. Basically I wan't a good example of what classical (as opposed to jazz) clarinet should sound like. I have no preference as to what piece specifically, which makes my question a bit harder to answer, probably. If you could give titles of any good CDs I'd really appreciate it.

I know this sort of thing has been discussed in the past. I ran a search, however, I found that the titles of specific CDs were not generally listed, and titles are what I'm after.
Thanks,
erica

John Manasse playing the Weber chamber music is just the most perfect tone I have ever heard.

I forgot to put a specific title... I don't know if my CD has one, it just says John Manasse playing Weber Chamber Works! You can go to towerrecords.com and type in the artist and composer, and find it there.

...ANY Benny Goodman recording. He's played it all, from jazz to classical and back. He sets the standard all of us- including Stalzman, et al- follow. IMHO.

Blech!

While I enjoy BGs artistry, I can't say I hold his tone up as a model of anything ... even during his heyday he hardly ever hit the top of the Downbeat charts ... but he had a heck of a good band.

But ... I'm probably in the minority here ;^)

Good CD examples:
1)Karl Leister plays Brahms #1/#2 with Wuritzer, (German)
2)MIchel Arrignon plays Rossini with Buffet, (Bright French)
3)Charles Neidich plays Weber with specially made straight horn(history sound),
4)de Payer plays Mozart with his large English bore horn(Englsih),
5)Harold Wright plays Heinrich Baerman Adagio with his Moennig tuned Buffet
(American dark),
6)Stanley Drucker plays Bernstein (More transparent American).
They sound like described in ( ) to me. Each classical player differs very much.

I say that a good example of clarinet tone would be David Schifrin playing the Copland Clarinet Concerto.

I agree with Mark - Benny Goodman's tone is not something I would try to emulate. I put dePeyer in the same catagory. I think for me, Karl Leister has the tone that I tried to copy in my youth. His recording of the Von Weber First Concerto is outstanding.

Steve,
Try listening to some of the early dePeyer. I originally heard late dePeyer and wondered why he had any recordings out. Then I heard dePeyer from 20 or 30 years ago and wondered no more ...

Most of us will probably agree that Harold Wright had one of the purest sound one has ever heard.
He has quite a few recordings and I would recommend 2 that will give a pretty good idea of how beautiful his tone is:

1- Brahms: The Clarinet Sonatas; Schumann: Fantasy Piece
H. Wright, P. Serkin
Boston Records (BR 1005)
The best recording of these pieces in my opinion

2- Live Recital no 1 / Harold Wright
H. Wright, L. Battle
Boston Records (BR 1023)
(Debussy, Saint Saens, Martinu, Lutoslawski)

I would add to this the Mozart concerto and quintet recorded by David Shifrin.

I heard de Peyer's Mozart Concerto in 1960's by a Grammophone record when
I was in a primary school. What a transparent and pure tone he has! I felt.
Plinz(Prinz?) of the Vienna Phil's Brahms trio on Gramophone was also
very very nice.(He uses Ottomar-Hammerschmidt).

Recording technicians' abilities are very much characterized by the Manufacture.
Gramophone is very very good by their deep sound.
Decca of England is characterized by their sharpness(Zubine Mehta/Los Angels phil recordings are typical).

Listening to Leon Goosense(oboe), Dennis Brain(Horn), and
Marcel Moyse/Louis Moyse(flute) to enlarge your notion of articulation and
tonality variation. They can be heard on Adolf Bush orchestra's historical
recordings.

Bob C - you are right on the money. It has to be Marcellus doing the Mozart. Shifrin doing the basset clarinet thing and finally Karl Leister doing Brahms. Marcellus's sound is second to none IMHO
