 Orchestral Repetoire

I was just wondering if any of you have played and could offer any comments about these three pieces.
Copland - El Salon Mexico
Borodine - Polovetsian Dances
Schostakowitsch (did I spell it right?) - Symphony no. 9

I have been trying to find recordings of the first 2, and can't find the Copland anywhere. Not having much luck with the Borodine either.

Go to Google.com and type in any of those. There's plenty of recordings of them. (for Borodine type in "Prince Igor Opera" - because, of course, the "Polovetsian Dances" are from that opera")

I have a CD of El Salon Mexico with the NY Philharmonic and Bernstein conducting. It's on Deutsche Grammophon. This CD also has a performance of the Copland Clarinet Concerto with Stanley Drucker that my teacher strongly disapproves of.

About the Shostakovich (or Shostakovitch or Chostakovich or any number of other spellings) - I can't really recommend a specific recording but there are at quite a few on Amazon.com. The Haitnik recording is probably good- his Shostakovich No. 10 is excellent. What I can tell you about this piece is mostly academic- I recently did a long research project on Shostakovich. I won't put the long details here now, but I can post them if anyone's interested.

May I suggest the series of Shostakovich operas on Naxos. They are affordable and, in my opinion, extremely powerful emotionally.
Could I ask Micaela why her teacher disapproves of the Drucker version of Copland? I love it, but am always ready to listen to another opinion.

Beejay- see the question I asked about Copland recordings a week or so ago. My teacher says Drucker is all technique and no music. I kind of like the recording too, but I trust my teacher also. He recommends Benny Goodman or David Shifrin. I'm working on the Copland right now so I'm trying to hear all opinions also.

Nick -

I'm sure the Copland El Salon Mexico is available. The Bernstein version is excellent. It has big solos for Eb as well as Bb. For the clarinet concerto, Goodman is very fine, even if he does have a few technical problems in his stereo recording. My favorite version is William Blount with the Orchestra of St. Lukes, followed by Stoltzman.

The Borodin (note spelling) is available in many versions. The title is a transliteration from Cyrillic characters, so it has various spellings in English. Most often, it's "Polovtsian" rather than "Polovetisian." There's a great recording available on Sony Classics with Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, with Marcellus playing the clarinet solos.

The usual English spelling of the third composer is "Shostakovich." I know there are numerous recordings of the 9th Symphony, but I'm not familiar enough with them to recommend anything.

Good luck. Great solos in all of them.

Ken Shaw
