 Uebel Classic vs. Buffet E11
Author: tucker 2017

A band mate is looking to buy a moderately priced Bb. She's narrowed it down to an E11 or Uebel Classic.

Since I play a Uebel bass that I love, I'm not able to give her an objective opinion, so I'm turning to all of you.

Anyone play a Uebel Classic? Compare it to E11? Any input is appreciated!

Never tried the e11 but I’ve tried the classic and an e12F. I prefer the e12f as it feel more even imo. My main clarinet right now is a ridenour G1. You can find it for sale on eBay for about $1400. Plays better than clarinet at double the price. Just a suggestion. In the end your student should try them and just go with what feels more comfortable.

The Uebel has so much going for it at its price point: double silver plating, adjustable thumb rest, leather pads (advantage is durability).

I tried one a few years a ago and the sound was great. There was a bit of wonkiness to the internal pitch though, so you just want to check it well with a tuner.

I'm under the impression the cheapest Uebel models have slight intonation issues. I need to check again when I get my hands on one. But the keywork quality and tone are superb, whereas you'd have be careful to get a really good copy of an E11.
Some of them, being the cheapest wooden clarinets in the Buffet line, have severe quality issues, well covered by stainimg and laquer first sight.
The Uebel has more going for it IMHO.

Since 2009 the E11 has been made in France under Buffet management (at the old LeBlanc factory, I believe. The newer ones I have seen are imbued with the variability that Buffet is reknowned for, so if you buy a new one, expect to need some work. IMHO, you would be better of buying a recent Vito 7214 (from eBay or shopgoodwill.com for <$50) and spending $200-$250 for a thorough service; the keywork on these is very nice. When set up well, these are very competitive with an E11 that is similarly set up and they are stable and rugged (I have seen several E11s less than 20 years old with significant cracks, including one that was bought new for one of my kids).

I have only seen one of the Uebels and it played well.

>> Since 2009 the E11 has been made in France under Buffet management... <<

Not exactly. It started that way, and they came out with the E11 France model which had maybe the largest release, with a lot of advertisement and its own website, but also serious design flaws. They advertised the post mounting system as a feature, but in reality that was the main problem, with (statistically speaking) posts popping out often, making clarinets suddenly unplayable. It was discontinued just a few years later with all those ads and website mostly gone...

Some years ago they started making its replacement model, the E12F. Both E11 and E12F clarinets that I've seen recently were made in Germany.
