John,
I have three or four Sumner mouthpieces three in a #3 facing and one in a #4 facing. All of them say standard on the lay except one and it says pro (or something like that) on it. All of them play rather nicely. Older mouthpieces from the sixties I believe. Chet Rowell told me a some pro's used them back then. I like using them on the Vintage horns. Nice blanks (Chedeville I believe). Some of our mouthpiece guru's can shed more light. Perhaps Greg Smith or Chris Hill would like to comment.
If the barrel is as good as the mouthpieces seem to be it is probably a pretty good barrel.

Bob Scott, another well known mouthpiece maker used the Sumner blanks for his mouthpieces back in the seventies.

I've had a lot of luck working on Sumners. There are two different types of blanks I've seen; one with a straight baffle, and one with a scooped baffle. The ones with the scooped baffle played well with very little work (just a facing, and a little bit of upper baffle scraping.) I've seen very few Sumners with a straight baffle.

Ditto to what Chris has to say. The material was excellent and the overall quality of the blank was superbly made. Easy to bring back to life. I also have a grenadilla Sumner that is one of the most beautiful playing and sounding that I own.
