BASS Clarinets In Pop Music ...
Author: Chris P

While there are plenty of pop tunes that use soprano clarinets in them, which pop tunes/songs use bass clarinet?

The only one I can think of is the Beatles - "When I'm Sixty-Four"

Chris.

I think 'Midnight' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers has a bit of bass clarinet in it - not exactly prominent though

Chris,

What modern pop songs use clarinet? When I looked I couldn't find anything made within the last 40 years, at least not any music that was made by anyone well known.

I always liked the little bass clarinet lick in the Adams Family theme. Sometimes I play this during rehearsal warmups and get little smiles and nods from bandmates.

"Death's Door" by Depeche Mode uses a clarinet(ish) choir. From what I understand, they recorded live players, then processed the sound to kinda tweek the tone/texture to their liking. It's more atmospheric.

As for soprano clarinets used in pop music, here's a topic about that:

Some hip-hop oriented examples:

MC 900 Ft. Jesus uses bass clarinet throughout his 'Welcome to My Dream' album, often in subtle ways. It can be heard increasingly in the opening track:

They Might Be Giants has been rocking the contra-alto recently. Here they are playing mostly 'unplugged' for Conan:

There's a group called "Hopetoun Brown" here in NZ that features Bass clarinet quite a lot (the guy playing BC started his career as Bari Sax player in a group called Supergroove, I believe, and the BC isn't exactly errrr elegantly played).

I love Gorillaz! I never took the time to listen to the full Demon Days album though.

There's contrabass on Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock"

Also a song by Peace Orchestra the name of which escapes me right now has bass.

The bass clarinet made a recent appearance on Saturday Night Live. That probably hasn't happened very often.

Paul Simon has some tasty new chamber music oriented arrangements that he's been bringing out:

Captain Beefheart - Live in Belgium 1969 on YouTube. Bass Clarinet starts at 1:50. (Although I'm not sure if this is pop music).

Another pop song featuring Bb soprano clarinet from the year 1955 called Midnight In Moscow featured Andy Cooper on clarinet.

Hello all,

"Lone" by Tyler, the Creator features a bass clarinet in the background.

"Frankie Sinatra" by The Avalanches features a looped Bb Soprano in the beginning.

These are probably some unorthodox examples of clarinet in pop music but it's cool to see clarinet so far away from its comfort zone.

I am also in the hunt for later than 2000 examples of pop/mainstream music that has clarinet/bass clarinet in it. Let me know if you find anything.

Cheers,

EM

Here's another crack at linking to Paul Simon's new 'chamber' backup band (I think the clip Nellsonic referred to must have been yanked by the IP gestapo). Bass clarinet very definitely in the mix. Here's another clip in that vein:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXbwSvG7qjk

didn't get the name of the group (apparently it IS a group) accompanying. They're on his new album, at least on some tunes.
