Do all Boosey and Hawkes horns need special mp,s? I have just recieved a 2-20 and I want to replace the mouthpiece. Thanks

My old Emperor works just fine with a Vandoran mouthpiece. However, I believe that since they are large bore clarinets they do perform better with an appropriate mouthpiece. I would also be interested to learn of any other mouthpieces that may suit these clarinets.

A couple of sources who make mouthpieces for large bore clarinets are Peter Eaton (a sneezy sponsor) and Edward Pillinger. They both have quite informative web sites. However, both are in England, which may complicate trying out mouthpieces.

Although many people smarter than I insist that wide-bore clarinets such as the B&H's need matching wide-bore mouthpieces to play properly, in my own experience this hasn't been unambiguously true. I've restored and played four B&H "The Edgware" clarinets, with non-B&H mouthpieces of various brands, and had no problems (but then again, I'm only a part-time semi-pro/advanced amateur-type player). I've also refaced three wide-bore mouthpieces (two B&Hs and an old Jack Brymer) and played them on narrow-bore French instruments, also with reasonable results (as far as I could tell) in terms of resistance, response, and intonation. But I would tend to believe that, all other things being equal (which they never are, of course) a mouthpiece whose bore is matched to that of the clarinet SHOULD work better, and would be the preferred setup.

If you mean that the mouthpiece reciver in he top of the barrel is too small, which is the case with some older Boosey horns because they are sleeved in a particular way, most mouthpieces work OK but need to be turned down to fit. I do however have an old boosey pair which came with an original mouthpiece and they definitely play better with the original which is better matched to the bore but harder to play and produce volume. I turned down a Selmer c85 120 to fit these particular instruments which increased volume but becomes an adventure in the third register, how many F fingerings is it possible to use in one day, and blows way sharp needing the barrel out 1/4 of an inch.
