Intermediary Tone on a C

Hi there,

I'm borrowing an A clarinet (Buffet Festival) from a friend for a recital and it's a beautiful instrument but I keep on getting a very brief intermediary tone when jumping to C (2 octaves above middle C) from around an octave below which I've never got before. I've been working on embouchure and support which usually rectify these things but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Can you tell what note it is?
Is it a low sound or one of the overtones?
Does a tad more mouthpiece help?

Any other more detailed info?

I take it you mean all fingers up open “C”. It sounds like a “mechanical” problem. It may be your fingering, which could be a little off due to the difference in the horns, which is my first guess. Or, the regulation may be off somehow. If you go up and down one note at a time you may find where it starts, which can tell you where things are going wrong. (like B,C,A,C,G, etc., or chromatic). If it’s not your fingering, it might be the bridge/bis key. It could even be that your own horn is out of regulation, and you compensate, which makes it seem like something is wrong with the new one.
