 Sumner Mouthpiece Facings
Author: Episkey

I recently acquired a Sumner Acousticut mouthpiece with the facing no. 2. Upon searching the board and the web, it seems that the no. 3 facing is more prevalent and I was actually able to find what a tip opening of a 3 typically would be from searching the board and “that auction site”.

However, I couldn’t find any information on what a 2 would be, or any definitive chart or table of information.

This is the blank style with 5 lines up and 1 down. STANDARD is written on the table.

I don’t have any info on the #2 facing, but I thought I’d add my rave for these. I do own several 3’s, 4’s, and a “B”, and a later (less amazing) specimen that was made from a Babbit blank. For me, Sumner is the sleeper amongst vintage mouthpieces. Most of the pieces with original facings range from unbalanced to unplayable. However, if you get one made from the German rubber (not Zinner, it’s another company that I believe is out of business ) it can be refaced to play very similarly to a Kaspar. I no longer play my Chicago Kaspar in favor of these pieces. The colors one can produce are fantastic. The best part is you can find one on eBay for $20-$30, spend another $75 to have it refaced, and end up with a real winner.

My "untouched" Sumner Acousticut 3 measures at...

1.16mm 32 20.5 11 6 (so, 1.16mm tip, 16mm long)

My SA3 refaced by Robert (Bob) Scott measures...
1.12 35 24 12 6

Many years ago I traded a refaced #3 for some work refacing a broken Kaspar, and regretted it almost immediately.

This mouthpiece is far from unplayable. I immediately trialed it in some wind band rehearsals and concerts with little difficulty on a D’Addario Reserve 3.5+.

I’m assuming the no 2 facing is closer than the larger numbers?
