After reading a bit on Steuer reeds recently, I've decided I would like to give them a go. I've already tried some on my tenor sax, and like them so far. I would like to know a bit more about the different types that they make (I have tried searching on this forum, but haven't found that much specifically comparing the different varieties of Steuers).
According to the Steuer website, the Exclusive, Classic and the French 1 are all designed for Boehm system setups (I play a Peter Eaton International). I currently use V12 3.5 reeds, so I'm not certain which of the Steuers would be closest to start with. Then there is also the Advantage, which is listed alongside the other French style reeds on the website, but then on Steuer's own reed strength chart is listed as a German style reed. Also, the Advantage is significantly more expensive than the others (on Reeds Direct).
Obviously I just need to buy a bunch and try them for myself, but would also be interested to hear about those who have experience comparing the various Steuer lines. Thanks in advance.

Haven't tried French, but the main difference between Classic and Exclusive seems to be that the tips are a bit thinner on the Exclusives. Whether that's good or bad depends on your preference and the facing on your mouthpiece, but I had better luck with the Exclusives. I get a better sound with Leuthners and Pilgerstorfer Dolces, though.

You should try emailing, calling, or texting Bob Bernardo. He is the US distributor of the Steuer reeds, and he can answer your questions. I am pretty sure he still does give you free samples to try. You can find his info on the US Steuer reeds website.

dorjepismo -> what mouthpiece do you use that you like the Leuthners and Pilgerstorfer Dolces?
My best reeds are either of the Steuers or the Behn Arias, but the Leuthners work well too.
I use Behn Vintage II mouthpiece.
All German style reeds are designed for very long, very close mouthpiece facings and of course, they wouldn't work well on a mouthpiece that V12's do work well on.

I like them on both a Pillinger and an Eaton 1010 mouthpiece. Both have facings in the order of 21 mm long and 1.15 to 1.2 mm open at the tip. They both describe the length as that, using the "real" length. When I measure the length with the thinnest shim, I get about 19 mm. It seems likely that with a closed facing, a thicker tip would be called for, but I haven't played a closed facing in a long time, so I can't say that for sure. I did try out V12s before going full Viennese, and liked the feel but not the sound.

My students have gradually been discovering these reeds. I've been using them (Exclusives) myself for several years now. About 4 out 5 that I give a sample to switch over to them and have trouble being happy with Vandorens afterwards.
Glad you are back in stock, Bob! My reed bank is depleted from helping out students with Solo & Ensemble around the corner at one of the local high schools.
