Hi all! I have a few students with an opportunity to perform at an end-of-the-year studio recital at their high school. I’d like to avoid solos on the Texas PML (for those who are familiar). Piano accompaniment is not required, but would be good for these young players. I’ve got Verdi’s Andante from La Forza del Destino as an option. Recs for other solos not typically on state lists with accompaniment? Thank you!!!

Two Pieces for Solo Clarinet by Koh Okumura.
Beautiful, lyrical, atmospheric, with a few fast technical areas.
And certainly something that has not been played by too many others.

I spend quite a bit of time picking solos for my students, particularly when they are not yet accomplished enough to play the big standards. I think it's tough to do this for someone else's students without knowing their individual strengths and weaknesses, as well as their performance histories. One of the things I'm mindful of is exposure to a wide variety of historical periods and national schools over the course of their time with me.
I'm sorry to be of no immediate help here, but these are some of things you might want to be thinking about. My high school students range from beginners to quite accomplished so there's really a huge spectrum of music I might assign them, but it's very individualized. I try to let my upperclassman have some input on at least one of their pieces each year, for example picking which of the more challenging movements of the two Brahms sonatas they want to learn for their yearly evaluations. This gets them listening more widely and critically to something beyond the confines of their immediate assignment, which is one of my big goals for them.
