Did you ever have a conductor like the one in the movie "Whiplash"?

Oh boy.... In 5th grade, the woodwinds and brass were split up. We would hear the teacher across the school yelling at one of the students because he forgot his music or came in late. She would also make anybody who forgot their music sit awkwardly on one of the benches in the cafeteria in the front of the room. Most of the students quit after that because it was such a traumatizing experience.

The guy in Whiplash? I don't call that conducting.

J K Simmons, a terrific actor. That scene where he repeatedly slaps the drummer - that wouldn't have worked very well on some drummer's I've known.

I didn't even have drill instructors like that in Army basic. I played for a couple of conductors in high school who had reputations that would have matched Simmons's character, but they were never as bad in real life. Makes a good story, though. Simmons is a terrific actor - made me cringe as I watched that scene with the drummer.

One really cool thing about that movie was that the kid (Miles Teller) actually played the drums in the movie. He had played in high school and worked so hard to be able to play the parts in the movie that the scene where they showed his hands bleeding from practicing so much was not fake.

My colleague, Hank (Henry) Levy at Towson University, he passed several years ago, wrote "Whiplash" and was the Jazz Band director for years. He would have been appalled by the conduct of that "conductor" as pretrade in the movie.

>> One really cool thing... <<

I looked into this and AFAIK that's not true.

I liked the movie but I think it would have been better if they would have toned down his character slightly to be a little less mean. The way they did it makes it a little cartoony which loses the dark atmosphere. Also the ending with them smiling at each other was terrible.

Actually, it's widely documented and easily confirmed.

Revelli was just like that.....

Complete spaz if everything wasn't exactly as he wanted it.

In my junior high school and senior high school in Minnesota, many teachers and the principals had wooden paddles for use on the students. It was different with each teacher and some used it frequently. The band leader, a fine violinist himself, hardly ever used it.

Yeah....Buddy Rich, though he never physically touched anyone.

Another leader, Jack Morgan, would cuss us out n the stand and on the bus for no real reason...normally after a string of one nitghers when everyone was a bit edgy....one night, the 2nd alto had enough and threatened to take him on outside.

No fists were thrown....but last I saw of the 2nd alto was him trudging up the road in the middle of nowhere Kansas with a bari, alto, clarinet and suitcase....the rest of us kind of stunned...I saw him a few months later so he got home safe....though I don’t know how.

He was a funny (wierd) guy...could be a funny cat, and could be a real sob, typically, when we had a string of one nighters.

I went out with him twice on lead alto...1978 for 6 months (I picked up a Las Vegas house band gig) and again in 1980 for a short west coast tour, where he was far more relaxed.

I stared him down once on the stand...after that, if I hit a lemon, he'd start to chew me out...then go after the tenor player instead.

Typical bully behavior.

Anthony

I don't recall ever playing flute on his band.

Clarinet, soprano, alto and bari is all I remember. I did have my flute with me to keep my chops up, but don't remember having it on the stand.

We did play a soprano sax trio on The Entertainer.
