How are university auditions for bass clarinet generally (or specifically for University of British Columbia) handled? Am I expected to play the audition on my soprano or am I expected to play the soprano excerpts on my bass? Sadly the website offers no help

Wow! UBC visited our school last week. I have to say that their band played very well. The music professor, Dr.Taylor, was a really great conductor and left some really useful insight. We got to eat dinner with a few of the musicians and they were all super friendly!
While the professor was giving us feedback, he really emphasized on playing lightly so that when we did have to slur or accent a note, it would pop out more so while playing your pieces, I would remember that. He was pretty hard on the concert master because during one of our pieces (Profanation by Bernstein), he said that his attacks were too aggressive and shrill. I guess you could interpret it either way because the piece is mixed meter and has a hectic vibe to it but I'll leave that to you.
Email the professor! It'll show that you're genuinely interested in the program and he'll have your name in the back of his head.

First off, good luck for auditions when they do come up!
I'm not personally a UBC student, but I'm in the area and know a fair bit about the local schools. I believe Jose Franch-Ballester is going to be continuing as the clarinet professor next fall, so he would be the one to email regarding auditioning on bass or soprano. He's an incredible clarinettist, and a really nice guy too.
Usually people do auditions on soprano clarinet, because majoring on bass clarinet is not usually an aspect of most university programs. (Note that I say usually, there are exceptions. I don't intend to start an argument on the topic, just stating what is common practice.)

I am an Affiliate Artist in Clarinet at the University of Houston Moores School of Music and accept bass clarinet students. We of course, add the clarinet as a the student develops musicianship and skill on the bass, and I have several bass clarinet students playing recitals on both instruments. One is perfoming the Brahms Sonata Op. 120 No.2 on clarinet, an arrangement of the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor for two bass clarinets and Mendelssohn Op. 113 for Clarinet , Basset Horn and Piano and is playing basset horn! The point is, that if students show excellent musical potential and skills on bass clarinet, and their grades are excellent, we are glad to have them! Both of the clarinet instructors here are proficient on both bass clarinet and clarinet.

Call the admissions department. Is this for a performance degree or music ed? The clarinet professor may not even play bass clarinet. Many colleges will required you to audition on Bb-A. When I taught at Peabody they wouldn't accept a bass clarinet major but since I played and taught it a student was allowed to audition on both and could perform their required recitals on both but their juries only on regular clarinet. I do believe more schools accept bass clarnet majors today but that depends on the program and the teacher. Call.
