I recently purchased a Protec reed case in one of their really cool colors. However, the butt end of the reeds I use (V12 or D'dario for b flat) is too long to clasp the case shut. I end up jamming the reeds into an already touchy compartment and more often than not chipping or breaking them. Removing the metal clasp didn't work.
If I got a slightly larger size (soprano or alto sax) case would the reeds still fit? I like everything else about Protec's concept, from the colors (for separate sets of reeds) to being large enough to fit the Boveda humidpacks.
Has anyone used any other tricks with these cases? Please advise. Thanks

Those cases destroy reeds. At least in my experience. You have to jam them into the slot to close it (as you stated) and then they leave indentations on the heart. Reeds of thicker blanks also have difficulty fitting. And I know of at least one situation where a friend of mine had the tip of her plastic Reed crushed by the hinge (it was too thin and the holder let it slide too far into the hinge when closed) Which is a shame because protects other products are usually pretty good.
Check out the d'addario Reed case. Similar but only holds 8 reeds.

I see these broken fairly often when my students have used them. The d'Addario case is much better. The hinge won't stand up to being dropped on concrete, but it's generally sturdy, as well as inexpensive and compact. It will hold reeds for any size clarinet you may play except contra. It's also designed to work with the Boveda packs.

Had an experience similar to GM. The blue plastic no-frills Vandoren reed case also holds 8 reeds and I've had good luck with it. Don't know about Boveda packs though.
