 Alexandre Paris Lamp Cleaning

I recently acquired an old, beat-up Alexandre Paris clarinet that I am looking to turn into a lamp. The keys have red rust and green tarnish on them-- what is the best method/chemical to clean them without significantly damaging the wood? Thank you :D

If all the keys are present and not broken, why not turn it into a functional clarinet? Springs, pads, and corks are all replaceable. The only other thing to look for would be significant cracks. If there's no major cracks, this horn could live again and make beautiful music.

If you have your heart set on a lamp that looks good heres what I would do.

1.) Take all the keys off the instrument,

2.) Try cleaning the keys with silver cleaner,

3.) If the keys are plated and the plating is worn off I would strip off all the old plating and paint the keys. I have seen a spray paint that is bright chrome colored designed for touching up the chrome on cars.

4.) Reasemble the clarinet for use as a lamp.

Carol:

I happen to have an Alexandre clarinet. Sure, it's not a great clarinet but I actually like the way it plays. I'm sure yours would be playable with a little TLC or $$.

I've seen some metal clarinets on ebay and I think that if you want to make a lamp then a metal clarinet would be really cool to do that with. Most of the ones I've seen don't have mouthpieces with them but I think that would be fine if you're going to make a lamp out of it......

Keep in mind that a silver clarinet/lamp must be polished now or then or it will look crappy. Best to make it playable and enjoy it. If ya gotta make a lamp out of some poor clarinet, get on thats cracked beyond repair or an older Pan Am. that can't be tuned or something. Just my 2 cents worth.

Polish it and then lacquer the metal parts.
