 Legere Reeds
Author: Ben Shaffer

I bought a Legere Classic Reed over a year ago.
It sounds great, has a very focused sound and I've been playing it that whole time.
It's got a slight tear in the tip but still sounds fine.
Over the last 9 months or so, I've bought 3 other Classic reeds and to me they are all duds, they have a very stuffy sound.
I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak and to that end I would like to try some other legere model Reeds.
Could you all recommend some other legere models?
And if so ,
a half step down from your usual strength?
Thanks!

I have two Legere (not European) Signature reeds which I like. Contrary to the Legere chart, I found I needed 1/4 lower than for the standard Legere. I've heard that the European Signature is very good, but I have not tried one.

I had the same experience. Bought one Classic and it plays/sounds fantastic, so I bought several more and they are all stuffy and dull sounding with sluggish response compared to the first one.

I've had the same experience with the Signature series. One plays/sounds fantastic, several others just play/sound "ok". The "ok" reeds are still better than the stuffy Classic reeds, however.

I've tried two of the European Signature reeds. Both have been really good. They are based off the soprano sax Signature reed (which some people prefer), so they are a little wider than the regular Signature. This caused me to damage my first ES reed while carelessly slipping it into my reed case.

I've also tried one Signature soprano sax reed. It plays/sounds decent but seems unnecessary as the ES clarinet reed is based on the same design and fits the clarinet mouthpiece better.

Yesterday, I took a chance and bought an Eb traditional 2.5 Legere out of a sales box for $6 and zounds, it plays great on my Yamaha 621 and its Bay mpc.

And to answer a query from tucker67,( my cell no longer allows me to anwer emails) I play some Forestone bass clarinet reeds on my Buffet 1190-2 low C bass that were sent to me years ago as "prototypes", experimentals. For whatever reason, they were never placed in production by Forestone...a mystery to me. So my alternative bass reeds are Legere trads, 2.5 on my Walter Grabner BSCX very excellant mouthpiece. More often I use the Forestones, but recently must revert to the Legere occassoionally because my favorite F got damaged and no longer plays.....darn those plastic folding reed cases.

Hope you get to see this answer to your email tuck and that it helps a bit.

Thanks, William! I might try a Forestone tenor sax... see what happens.

I was going to reply to this string by saying I've tried LOTS of Legeres on my bass. Your mouthpiece certainly makes a difference. I had a new C* that didn't like Legeres at all. Fobes works great with Legeres. Vandoren B50 not so great but Vandoren B44 works well.

I've found that Legeres are NOT consistent. Some play GREAT, other's: meh of the same strength.

I like a tenor sax studio cut best for bass.

Thanks again, William!
