What are some of the best/competitive youth orchestras in our country?
I heard that the greater boston youth symphony orchestra is pretty good. They get to go on tours of Europe, etc. Do all youth orchestras get to go on international tours?
how do these youth orchestras compare to All-state bands, etc?

WYSO (World Youth Symphony Orchestra) is at Interlochen. Heard them play the Jupiter a couple of years back ... blew my socks off --- WOW!

Also WYSO (Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orhcestra) founded by the same Marvan Rabin that founded the Boston bunch. Now conducted by James Smith, :Professor of Conducting and Wind Ensembles and the University of Wisconsin in Madison (and a former West Coast professional clarinetist), our orchestra regularily is invited to tour foreign countries--most recent tour of Japan was a great success. IMHO, we are good!!

I'm not from the states, but I do play in a youth orchestra of Queensland, and I have been in a state honours band. Also, last year the Portland Youth Orchestra toured New Zealand and Australia and my family billitted two players. A horn player and clarinettist. They did a shared concert with the Queensland Youth Symphony, and they played a Wagner overture, Copland - Appalachian Spring and some other peices. I thought they were fantastic, and I've heard that they were the first ever and most highly acclaimed youth symphony in the states. It's hard to compare a youth symphony to an all state band.. the music is completely different, but I'd have to say the standard is higher in the symphony.

I think the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is great, but then I am a little bias because I just was excepted into it. Around here in Northeastern Ohio, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is the top orchestra to get into if you are under the age of 19. They practice and perform in Severance Hall and they are coached by members of the Cleveland Orchestra. This year the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra went to New York and performed in Carnegie Hall. I would be very curious to see how the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra stacks up with the other top youth groups in the United States.

The American Youth Philharmonic in Northern Virginia is exceptional! They were invited to that national youth orchestra thingy in sarasota, florida. Them and i think Minnesota Youth Orchestra and one other.

I don't think there's any "best youth orchestra" competition anywhere, and I don't think I'd support such a thing. They're all made up of talented young musicians.

The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra also went to the national youth orchestra conference-thing in Florida... unfotunately I didn't get to go because I graduated the previous year! But they are good, also.
