Hi all
In October this year I'm going to be playing in a full symphony orchestra for the first time in around 15 years. We'll be doing Bruckner 8, which I'm not familiar with so planning to do some listening - does anyone have any recommended/favourite recordings of this one?

Sound quality's horrible, but the Furtwängler recording is pretty special. Rattle with Berlin is great, and Solti with Chicago was no slouch. Some really nice clarinet writing at some critical moments.

One of my favorite pieces. I hope you'll love playing it! I've been lucky enough to hear it done well in concert twice in the last year.
Many Bruckner enthusiasts make something of a fetish of Celibidache's interpretations - for good reason. He felt strongly that music could only really be experienced live, which is part of why he isn't better known in the age of fame from recordings. Fortunately we now have Youtube:

I also quite like Pierre Boulez's recording with the Vienna Philharmonic, the orchestra that premiered this piece. He was masterful in bringing clarity to large scale works like this without sacrificing any emotion.

Nellsonic,
Have to listen to this tomorrow. Ever see the YouTube video of him conducting Egmont Overture in the early '50s in the ruins of the Philharmonie with (obviously) Berlin? "Iconic" is overused and probably meaningless, but . . .
