I hope someone can help me. I'd liketo have some more information of an Boosey & Hawkes Emperor clarinet from 1955. Serial number: 11257B
this clarinet is about the same as an B & C E13??

The Boosey and Hawkes Emperor was B & H's entry-level professional instrument. The B & H hierarchy is as follows with modern approximate equivalents. Bear in mind that these instruments have not been manufactured since around 1984.

Regent. Student instrument. Approximate equivalent B12, Vito, Yamaha 250.

Edgware. Advanced student/intermediate, Equivalent Yamaha 450, E11.

Emperor. Intermediate/Entry-level professional. Equivalent E13, Yamaha 650.

Imperial. Professional instrument. Equivalent R13, Leblanc LL.

1010 or Symphony. Larger bore professional instrument. Equivalent Peter Eaton International.

Note that the equivalents listed are not directly equal, they just indicate the appropriate position compared with the B & H hierarchy. In most cases the more modern instruments will play better, but not always. A good B & H can be very good.

With the exception of the Regent II and the 1010/Symphony these instruments all share basically the same architecture with regard to bore and keywork. The differences are mainly in the matter of material, fit, finish and tuning.

thnx for your reply. I found 1 on an auction side and wondered if the instrument would be good enough to place a bidding.

Tony, isn't the Peter Eaton equivalent of the 1010 the Elite, whereas the International is a French-style bore that's a bit narrower?

Boosey 1010 = Eaton Elite
Boosey 926 = Eaton International

Peter and Dorjepismo, You're quite right and I stand corrected. The Elite is based on thee 926 Imperial while the International is based on the 1010.

I think that to equate the Eaton International with the B&H 926 is not very accurate,
The keywork is of course very similar as it is all built on the old B&H factory jigs, however the bore and tonehole dimension are not related to the 926.
The International has a bore of 14.8 mm
The 926 bore is 15.05 mm

I realize that. I wasn't attempting to directly compare them, just trying to show what might be considered a present-day equivalent to the Imperial.

Indeed: I did once ask Peter Eaton if the International was his remake of the 926, in the same way that the Elite is an improved 1010 - I got a rather frosty answer. My clear impression is that he started from the Elite and tried to find a way to get the same tone quality from a narrower bore, rather than taking design hints from any other instrument.
