I am considering a performance music major and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on good colleges.

Most colleges are good--the question is, "how good are you?" No matter where you study, it will be up to you to perform, not your teacher. Personal commitment, hard work and pracice--plus ability--are key componets to consider when contemplating a degree in performance. Entering the world of the professional perfomance arts can be a "hard knock life" and you should be certain that you are ready. One of the horn players--once considered one of the "best four in the world"--that I knew, barely finished high school, and yet, after a distinquished career in the New York Phiharmonic and New York Woodwind Quintet, wound up as Professor of Horn at my old big-ten university. It wasn't "what school he sent to" that made him great, it was that he WAS great. My advice to you is, be certain that you know what you are getting in to by seeking a "performance" degree and re-consider a more marketable academic degree, perhaps Music Education. I apologize for being so negative with regards to your question, but too many people make the mistake of persueing a performance degree and find out in the end that they are not good enough to get a job. You may have what it takes--if so, go for it!!! Just be careful. Good clarineting!!!!!!!!
