Hi all,
I just noticed this on my Backun Protege bell. Is this a crack, or could it just be that the finish has come off somehow? If so, would it be enough to put a bit of superglue on it, since it doesn't look that bad?

Is it visible from the outside? It doesn't look like a crack but it's hard to tell with that photo. A crack would go all the way through the socket.

I really can't understand why some makers of bells and barrels do not use metal tenon rings which prevent cracks.

In my experience, bells can crack regardless if there is a metal ring or not. At least the wood ring will expand and contract with the rest of the bell.

I know it's not the best shot. Unfortunately it was the best I could get with my phone. Looking on the outside there doesn't seem to be any indication of a crack on the outside. So I guess that means it's not likely to be cracked?

The only time I have ever had a bell or barrel crack is when the rings are loose.

It looks as though the tool has gouged the wood while reaming the socket. ?May have been a sap vein or pocket in the wood. not a problem if it doesn't go through and not much of a problem if it does.
