Slap tonguing goes back as least as far as the 1920s as one of the "parlor tricks" for the instrument. Immersing it in "beat box" street performances also has a history perhaps with a granddaddy precursor in Boots Randolph. Jazz players like James Carter and Joshua Redman have found their own settings and contexts for the effect as, for example, Redman here:

Especially notable is what a classical sax wizard like Emanuele Delmaso is able to do with the technique. He just may be waiting for the right composer to direct him to sing and snap keys or clap hands between the slaps but what he does here in a performance of UNIQUE is magic enough (the slap tonguing begins at 1:54):

Thanks seabreeze, the Delmaso performance is really good.

Some time ago I looked online for the technique of slap-tonguing, and it sounded not terribly difficult. I still haven't worked on it though, but I do have one application for it, so, "in the fullness of time." Meanwhile, it's good to hear the various ways others are using it and other effects.
