 Bass Clarinet reed recommendations?
Author: Fuzzy
Date:   2017-10-30 16:02

In the old days, I always used Vandoren reeds...for everything: bass clarinet, soprano clarinet, all the saxes, etc.

I loved Vandoren reeds, but they never seemed to work as well on my Bass Clarinet as they did on all of the other instruments. They always seems to fight with me and were less free-blowing than other reeds I'd try.

I've since moved away from Vandoren (not out of any animosity...I've just found joy and consistency in various other brands along the way). I have decided to invest more time into my bass clarinet again, and am re-evaluating which reeds I should use.

For those of you playing bass clarinet...what reeds have you found work well for you in today's marketplace? (I'm not adverse to buying Vandorens again if that's the consensus.)

Thanks,
Fuzzy

I have avoided Vandoren reeds for a long time due to quality issues. However, I recently bought a B50 mouthpiece and I find V12 reeds to be outstanding with it. I use strength 3.

However, if you are playing a more closed mouthpiece like a C*, you are better off with traditionals.

Rico Grand Concert Select. Very consistent in my experience. Would buy again. :-)

Gonzalez, some cane years are better then others. When you find a good year buy a lot......

Vandoren V12 and Rico Grand Concert Select. But you have to work with them, usually.

I've tried to love Legeres on bass... which I don't. All depends on the mouthpiece (which I've tried a zillion). I've written to Legere to suggest the European model they're doing for Bb, but apparently it's not in the immediate future plan.

I do like a Legere tenor sax studio cut on bass. Just have to see if your mouthpiece is "Legere friendly".

Blue box and V12's are good after working on them. I like Steuer also.

The only way to know what's best for you is to try several types, Well worth the small investment.

Légère tenor sax Studio reeds work well for me on a variety of facing curves. Lately I prefer a fairly open .077" (1.95mm) tip with a fairly short 45 length. 2.5-2.75 Studio reed. So maybe the reed steered me to that facing.

Does anyone know the comparison in strength between Legere Signature Bass reeds vs Tenor sax studio cut reeds? I have a strength 3 Signature bass reed that play ok with my B50 but I'm wondering if would be worth it to buy a tenor sax reed.

echi... try a Legere studio 2.5 or 2.75. If you buy from Amazon, they'll allow you to return it if you don't like it. I bought numerous strengths and returned the ones that didn't play well on my MP.

Amazon takes a return on an open box? I wonder what they do with it?

Mojo, from what I can gather, sometimes the Legeres come from their warehouse and sometimes from a vendor. MOST of the time the Legeres appear to be un-opened/new. I did receive one that was obviously previously used, had some sort of grease on the vamp and what appeared to be dried spit on the tip. I just put it back in the box and returned it. I'm a Prime member, so there is no shipping charges either way. This method of trying Legeres was easier than Legere's own test program. I went through the whole gamut of bass reeds and tenor sax reeds of varying strengths.

I guess it will self regulate eventually. Amazon will notice a lot of returns or losses.

D'Addario Reserves. On a few different mouthpieces I've tried (from a 4C to a C*) they have given me consistent quality and great control of sound. I can sound more full-bodied or more reedy depending on the context of the music. I am also someone who uses Vandoren for everything (5RV+V21s on Bb) and I do not like them on bass, so I understand how you feel.

I play Vandoren 3 strength V12's on my C*. Decent consistency and great sound. Best reed I can find, now try some out and find what works for YOU.

Thanks,

Hi all,
I have referred to this site for info for a while and now wish to share my experience with bass clarinet reeds. The gold mine recently discovered is Steuer. As a former reed maker, I find that the cane is stable and that the reeds last a long time. The cane has not been exposed to pesticides and has been properly aged. I can generally use every reed in the box with some needing minor adjustments. I have tried and/or used Vandoren, Zonda, Rico Grand Concert, Marca, Rigotti and Alexander. Today my reed case is full of Steuers and a token Vandoren. Thanks for your insights and I hope this post will prove useful to you.

I'd not really found *any* bass clarinet reeds that I liked, in fact had resorted to using the Peter Leuthner Jazz Tenor sax reeds - low success rate, but the rare one worked fairly well. Bass is the one instrument that I simply haven't liked the Legere at all, at least not on my main mouthpiece (Fobes 10k), though I sometimes have had to use one in the pit.

However, I just tried the Vandoren V21 bass clarinet reeds and, with the caveat that it's my first box so small sample size, am quite happy with them. I definitely will buy another couple of boxes and hope that they're consistent.
