 Muncy Reed Case problems
Author: hunterirwin

I've had a Muncy Reed Case for over a year now, and recently I've been having lots of problems with my reeds becoming moldy all the time, and the sponge keeps drying out really quickly. I live in Eastern New Mexico. Does anybody else have these problems?

Thanks,

Hunter Irwin

I do not own the Muncy Reed case (the clear one?).

The two issues you describe, however, are at odds with one another: mold needs moisture to grow, but your sponge is drying out quickly.

What is the humidity in your part of the country like right now?

Please don't play on the mold reeds. To clean the reeds use 1/3 bleach to 2/3rds water. Then wash them well until you cannot taste the bleach. Use a 10 power magnifying glass to check for mold. Often you need this power to see the mold. Soak the reeds for a long time, 3 hours maybe? Check after 3 hours.

You can develop sinus an lung infections, mold infections, some are pretty nasty to the point in which you may not be able to get rid of the mold in your body for the rest of your life.

As a reed expert, for example I was the designer of the Grand Concert reed line back in the 1990's, but they aren't the same now. I designed the sop. sax reeds for the Hemke reeds and head of quality control for the Mitchell Lurie reeds from 1982 through 1997 or so. Rico made about 25 million reeds a year so multiply that by 15 years.

I don't think you need to worry about humidity in New Mexico at all. I've played all through that area as a pro and reeds have never been a problem. The only time you may run into a weird situation is if it is raining one day and then it snows and the humidity falls to about 5 percent from 60 percent for a few days. In this case just wet your reeds longer and more often. Before playing I would wet your reeds for about 10 minutes and if you feel them changing while you are playing redip the reeds for about a minute or 2.

Mold is nasty. If it were me I'd throw them away. Please be careful. Thanks!

Yikes - I forgot. Wash out your mouthpiece really well. There surely is mold on the mouthpiece as well. I don't know if you can use bleach on mouthpieces so soak the mouthpiece is soapy water overnight and rinse really well for maybe 10 minutes. Don't use water over about 90 degrees to keep the rails from warping.

If you develop a cold, a cough, can't take a deep breathe, see your doctor, not any doctor. An ENT (ear, nose and throat) or a Pulmonologist/Pulmonary Specialist. (Lungs)

A regular doctor may blow you off saying you just have the flu or something. You can't mess with mold and fungus. Hope this finds you in really good health.

Yep mold can be that bad and I care!
