What do you think is the minimum musically acceptable audition tempo for the excerpt from the first movement of Beethoven's sixth symphony starting two before K?

126 to the quarter note.

IIRC Beethoven has a MM of 66 to the half note. Some conductors take it a bit faster than that.

No orchestras play it at half note equals 66 tempo. Even historically-informed conductors, like Harnoncourt and Gardiner, go slower (it's a point of contention in Taruskin's Text and Act, though he looks at the numerous recordings of the 9th).

Who takes it a bit faster than 66???

The standard audition tempo in the U.S. seems to hover around quarter note equals 120. Some people play a few clicks faster, others a few clicks slower. Above 126 is outside the mainstream, I think.

The key word is audition. So I am assuming no orchestra is playing. You are playing alone. To take advantage of expression, sound, all of that - 60. I do not think any audition committee will stop you at 60 and ask you to play it faster.

George Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra has a youtube recording that is so beautiful, with Marcellus. Maybe zero in on that tempo. Georg Solti with Chicago also recorded it. I kind of favor the Cleveland recording, but both are excellent.

I played this last winter. Lots of beautiful clarinet solos. Maybe my favorite Beethoven symphony to play. Wish I could play it every year! I'd be happy so happy! :) I like the 9th too, but the 6th has those really delicate solos. Often the orchestra is at forte and suddenly the clarinet pops in at P. It's actually scary. lol
