Again the Advantage is plastic not grenadilla. Try both and decide which one you like the best. We can't decide for you.

Nope. This instrument 150% says yamaha advantage and I'm 150% sure it is grenadilia wood

Not to be prickly but....did I in any way shape or form even imply I was asking anyone to decide for me, or tell me to pick one or the other?

Sheese...you must be having a bad day.

I'm looking for discussion and comparison from those who have played both.

Comparing an E11 equipped with a good mouthpiece to a Yamaha 400AD crippled with its stock 4C mouthpiece isn't a fair comparison at all. You will want to carefully match a mouthpiece to the Yamaha, as you would with any fine clarinet.

There are technicians who specialize in Yamahas, such as Mike Lutley in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that can truly bring out the very best in these instruments.

A carefully regulated and meticulously maintained 400AD will be more than a match to any E11.

I apoligize that I was unaware of the 400AD (I've only ever seen the 200AD) but suggesting that others should harass me is immature and quite inappropriate. Such behavior is not appropriate for this fourm.

I apologize as well. I'm sure you are a honest. Upstanding professional. Sorry. It was a knee-jerk emotional (musician, arsty. Emo) reaction

Sorry

Do the Buffet Premium compared to the Advantage

Premium wins

Backun Alpha and Premium are in their own class above the Yamaha.

Alpha wins for me!

The AD-400 (YCL-450) plays with more weight in the sound and more blowing resistance than the most current E11. Keep in mind that Buffet has had a least three different production lines for the E11 ... not all created equally.

You can close your eyes and chose Yamaha.

The Yamaha mouthpieces are the worst. It's like buying a $1 million race car and putting skateboard wheels on it.

As for the rest of the instrument, the Yamaha is pretty decent. Just get a good mouthpiece. In most cases you can buy a Yamaha and it will play right out of the case. The pads seal.

Buffet's can be very good, but you may have to play 20 to find one that plays out of the case. The pads don't seal at all. You will still most likely need to find a decent non Buffet mouthpiece.

If you take care of the horns both seem to resell well.

I've heard a lot of people bad-mouth the Yamaha C4 and 5 mouthpieces. I find this a bit puzzling, as I found them to be perfectly good student-level mouthpieces. Probably not as good as the offerings from Fobes and Hite, but not as bad as some say. That being said, I wouldn't use one on other than a basic student-level instrument. Some years back I used a C5 on a B & H Edgware for a while and it played adequately.

The obligatory free Yamaha MPs are fair-minus, IMHO, at best. A bit rough sounding. There are worse MPs ... but not any of the mainstream brands.

I had a stand partner that loved the Yamaha MPs ... I had a couple that I gave him and he accepted enthusiastically. After a year, he finally graduated to a VD 5RV-lyre (non 13 series), a good choice, which I also provided.

I've bought a few YCL-400AD's for students and we've preferred them over the E-11's both new and used that we've tried them against. The tuning tendencies and the mechanism are superior, and at the time it only cost $1000. The examples I've gotten out here from Yamaha have come with unstained grenadilla wood, quite attractive to be honest.
