thumb rest

Almost lost it this morning. I was just playing along minding my own business when my thumb slipped off the thumb rest completely and the clarinet fell between my knees. Good thing I was able to catch it. Then I looked at the thumb rest and noticed it is curved more on the right side (I guess for added comfort - i.e. added slippage?). Is this a defect? Should I put it in a vice and straighten it out a bit? Any one ever had this happen?

The thumbrest that came with my R13 was more curved on the right. At first, I swapped it with the thumbrest of my old clarinet, which was not only straight but also much bigger in area. But I find myself going back to it for some reason. The only disadvantage to the curved thumbrest is you cant put a thumbrest cushion on it without it tilting. But the curved design is so comfortable that I abandoned the thumbrest cushion altogether. Right thumb never really hurts.

But of course, this is personal preference. You might not like it

You can put something non-skid on the underside of the thumb rest - a thin piece of cork or rubber, or put a covering around it - rubber tubing or one of the rubber covers the online vendors sell.

Thanks kdk. Tomorrow I will try sticking some rubber on it. It is presently covered with some kind of felt so I hope it will stick to it. But now that I know it is prone to slipping, I am mindful of it and re-adjust my thumb position on it periodically while I'm playing.

Take the felt off if you're going to mount a piece of cork or rubber. Then use contact cement to hold the new material in place.

If you're going to use a rubber cover to go around the whole rest, it doesn't matter if you leave the felt alone or not.
