I’m considering switching to one of these, but my experience with the crystal mouthpieces is that they are extremely inconsistent. Last time I tried out a couple Pomaricos, I got three: one was fine, one was borderline unplayable, one was somewhere inbetween. With the retailer’s very limited stock I couldn’t get a combination of playability and dimensions that I liked.
So anyway, my question is: if I’m serious about wanting to switch, how many of them do you think I should get to trial to get a good one? I’ll probably have to get Backun to ship them to me, so I’d like to be efficient. They advertise the quality control on the Backun-branded ones as being higher than the regular Pomaricos, but that doesn’t really help me that much.
Any opinions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris

They could be made very consistently and all be bad for you and your reed choices.
Comsider getting one and having a refacer compare its facing to your favorite mouthpiece.

I have tried many Pomarico over the years (I probably own 6 or 7 of them), and also found them to be wildly inconsistent. Found a "wizard" model that I liked better than my MoBa and my Hawkins - had a certain "life" (or ping, as some say) to the sound, while still being dark and "legit" sounding.
I tried a bunch of the Backun mouthpieces at Midwest last year, and they all played extremely consistently (for me, at least). I ended up getting a CG, and it is my main mouthpiece now - quite a big improvement over even the wizard model, IMO. You may want to try the CG+ as well, they told me it was outselling the CG these days.

The CG seems the closest to what I currently play (an ORT+, which I like a lot). But that’s a good reminder I should try both. Just from the specs, it looks like the CG and CG+ are derived from the Wizard mouthpieces. I liked the “close” version of the Wizard in theory, but had the consistency issue. I only could try one “open” Wizard and couldn’t get that comfortable with it (even trying out a range of reed strengths), but was never sure if it was a bad instance or just too open for my preferences. The fact that one of the three I got was literally unplayable sort of weakened my confidence in the small sample size. It’s good to hear you found the Backun-branded ones more consistent.
