I am currently a sophomore at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM, majoring in music performance. I have been playing bass clarinet for about 8 years now. I currently play on a Selmer 32 Low C bass, provided by my school. For reeds, I use Vandoren 2 1/2 traditional, V12, & V21's. I use a rose gold Bonade inverted ligature. The mouthpiece I am using right now is a Selmer Focus, but I also own a C* that I've had since 9th grade. I am in the market for a more professional, handmade mouthpiece. I was looking for opinions on brands like Fobes, Pyne, Grabner, etc.

I'm a doubler so the Grabner CX BB 90 works well for me on my Selmer Privilege bass.
Walter says "This IS NOT your stuffy old “Concert Band” mouthpiece, with a more open facing! One facing – 1.85 to 1.90 Tip. Legere Reed Friendly! Use a Number 2 1/2 or 3."
I use VD and Concert Grand reeds (2 1/2 or 3) and Legere' 2 or 2 1/2.
Get one on trial and see if you like it.

I used a Fobes nova for a number of years. I got a Fobes 10k blue RR facing ( sane as C*)this summer. Articulation is great. Response is great. Low notes sound crisper (for lack of a better word). Plays a little louder than my old Nova. Tunes higher than my nova too. I have to pull out more. I use a Yamaha 622 II low C bass clarinet.

I'm a doubler...I mainly use a Fobes SF RR (0.071" tip with 24mm length), but also own an HB (0.080" tip, 25mm)...these are measured.
The RR is just the right balance between enough resistance to play the upper clarion and altiss, but relatively freeblowing. THe HB was just too freeblowing...maybe if I ever play BC enough I will be able to handle it.
Have a modern B46 as well, which had similar limitations (for me) as the HB.
Fobes Debut is very easy to play, but I was unable to generate enough power with it for big band, which is my main BC use.
Have a Ridenour Artist as well, but it is unremarkable.
Have thought about trying a Grabner, as a K14 is one of my two choices on soprano clarinet.

I use a Moba Bass + on my Leblanc Low C Bass. That things really opens up the throat tones on my bass. I've tried it on a new Selmer Bass with the same effect. The Moba Bass + really opens up and is an "open" mouthpiece.
Currently using a Rovner Dark Lig with a Legere Signature 3 reed.

I also play on Fobes San Francisco RR for a year and a half now. It sounds terrific on my Yamaha 221 plastic horn, as well as on a Yamaha 622 and Buffet Prestige I've come across. For me it is lightyears better than the Vandoren B45 or B44 I used to play. I use Vandoren Blue Box 3s.
Or maybe send your C* to David McClune for refacing? Both Ed Palanker(who posts here from time to time) and Michael Lowenstern recommend his work.
Maybe I should leave this question for the more qualified guys to ask, but I assume there is something you're not happy with the 2 Selmer mps that led you to search for a handmade mouthpiece?

Fobes makes a great bass mouthpiece. Grabner are also nice. I have also heard good things about Dave McClune's bass mouthpiece.

A few years back, Dave Spiegelthal provided me a BC mouthpiece he had redone from an old one called Penn Los Angeles. It turned out to be perfect for me, more powerful than the Pomarico it replaced.
I love this mouthpiece with a #3 reed. Never a squeak, always great presence. Far superior to the mouthpiece which accompanied my Selmer-Paris C35.

I have a Grabner that replaced my Nova, which was still quite good. Mouthpieces are difficult and you really have to try before you buy.
