 Selmer clarinet with defaced logo

Just curious if anyone has some insight into why all the logos even the mouthpiece) would have been defaced on this otherwise reasonable-looking N Series Selmer Bb clarinet.

I've seen one like that on Portuguese eBay and was tempted, but the filed out logos put me off - maybe this is the same one.

All looks dodgy to me as though someone thought filing out the logo was the same as filing out the serial number.

Chris.

...however, he/she even provided a picture of the serial number!

They're actually filed off.....that's not just a photochop job? Yikes.....how stupid.

As that's in an Amati case, was it also an eBay purchase from Portugal? Seems to ring a bell ...

Chris.

As many of you know, Conn-Selmer has exclusive distribution rights for Selmer Paris instruments. There was a time (1960s) when the Conn-Selmer organization would not allow an individual to import a Selmer Paris instrument into the USA without their written permission. I know, because I asked and was refused permission. The alternative was to deface the logo so a customs agent would not confiscate the instrument or try to roll the dice and hope customs would not catch you trying to "sneak" the instrument into the country.

Ralph- that's really strange. So, did defacing the logo make importing one of these "legal", or just less likely to cause trouble? Any idea how many of these might have been altered? How easy to fix (just smooth and fill in, not necessarily restore)? Any chance of a crack initiating in a filed slot?

I actually bid on that (very low bid). I could have lived with the defacing for cheap. Shame that this was done to the clarinet.
