 Tonguing
Author: GenEric

I don't think i'm tonguing correctly. For the 4 years of me playing, I've been tonguing by hitting my tonguing to my bottom lip so the reed stops vibrating. I've been doing this because when people say to make the "ee" sound, I would keep me tongue forward and reached out. However, I found it better to mimic hissing like a cat because it actually forces you to pull your tongue back.

I was wondering if this is correct. I'm new to correct tonguing and I've never realized that you have to pull your tongue so far back. I guess it will take some time to get used to it because I always instinctively try to put my tongue back on the reed. Also, are there any exercises for light tonguing? I know it's "taste bud to tip of reed" but it's very uncomfortable. Any good exercises?

Can you go into more details? Where is your tongue? On the reed? Or is it hitting the bottom lip? Thanks! For starters I think, if I understand the question correctly using "ee" is old school. Perhaps from the 1950's and 1960's or so? So I'm concerned and need a bit more information! Before I say anything lets get more details. How is your sound? Do you pinch at all with your embouchure? Do your upper lips tend to go to the side of your mouth or push down towards your lower lip?

Just so you know we all have habits which might need correcting from when we first started playing.

I got lucky, had braces and played with a double because it didn't heart my upper teeth and I didn't bite. Maybe you are actually just fine when you articulate. Can you take a selfie, pic of the placement? Use a mirror so you can see well.
