What's wrong with this "picture" :) ?

Is this better than the one that Ferree's Tools sells for $22.50?

I think It's the same one. I have the one from Ferree's and it shows Copyrights of 1939, 42, 45 and 46. The one from Ferree's also has all the same illustrations shown in the eBay ad and if you look at the clarinet diagram on page 115 of the manual from Ferree's, it has an illustration of a full-boehm clarinet with a Selmer Paris trademark cartouche drawn on it. I'm pretty sure it's the same manual.

Nothing wrong with the .jpeg that I can see --- its the Real McCoy --- the first edition. In fact, the print quality might be as good or BETTER than the reprints. Agree with Rob's dates above.

I'd like to offer some thoughts and an opinion to two...
Conn also 'published' a reapir manual. As I recall, it looked much like the Erick Brand one that you can purchase from Ferree's today. It would be hard to say who compiled the first one and who copied, revised, edited, updated and put their name on it, etc. to suit their fancy. Brand's manual has a lot of useful information, some trivial outdated stuff, some shop practices that OSHA would frown at and some mis-indexed topics that aren't to be found in the text at all :
It's a nice piece of history, nevertheless, and probably woth more that Ferree's $22.50 price if you're into collecting memorabilia. I don't question that the print quality is very good. The paper is another matter - your guess is as good as anybody's. Acid content variation, you know.
For reference accuracy, if you want up-to-date stuff, you're better off working in a shop or on your own and making up your own personal notebook as you learn. As a start and for reference, manuals are good but a small book like that can't possibly cover all aspects of band instrument repair or even one particular instrument's repair. It has to, by its nature, be a 'condensed' book. But they're fun, old books are, and interesting to say the least....

I appreciate the comments on this 1939 version of the book vs. the one that's currently available.

Punch Line: I thought it was interesting to see the copyright statement in bold print stating that "no part of this book may be reproduced in any form --- " following by copies of two pages of the book.

So much for copyright laws or respect thereof. It seems there are so many ways around the rules it would be nigh impossible to chase everyone who decides to break 'em. Someone comes along, makes a few changes here and there and calls it their own -- and publishes it that way. (Graphic) artists do it all the time (steal with both hands) and it's probably routine in every other field as well. Being closer to a long time ago, the manual you're interested in is probably closer to 'original' than more recent ones. By the pix it looks like it's in pretty good shape. So far the price is not outrageous either.

Displaying a few pages of a book to promote its sale is considered "fair use". Whether or not putting those few pages up on the Web or a catalog is considered "fair use" is a much more complex subject. If it is only a few pages to show condition, etc. then I think you'll find that any court will give you leeway towards a fair use statute. Believe it or not - this kind of thing has gone to court more than once.
