 Portnoy mps
Author: Sarah

Hi all,

Im here to ask peoples overall opinions of Portnoy mps, particularly the Portnoy 3 (the widest one). I have been advised by my teacher that this would be best for me and was just wondering if anybody plays on this mp and how it affects your sound, darkens, brightens, tuning etc.

I currently play the 5RV lyre but have been advised that this would be better for the particular sound Im looking for.

Thanks in advance.

Any info is welcome.

Sarah

I have played a B. Portnoy mouthpiece since 1973, when I went to college. My teacher had studied with Portnoy, and we all played this mouthpiece It's been so long since I played anything else, I don't have much to compare it with, except my daughter's Bay, which I can't get much sound out of. I can play louder with the Portnoy, and I like the tone very well.

I've played the Portnoy 2 and found it had a nice warm tone. However, some of my customers from eBay have found it to be a bit "flat" compared to their Vandorens. I haven't played the 3. Guess you'll have to try one and find out for yourself with a tuner.

The Portnoy 2 I've had for years is about 10 cents flat, a great mouthpiece for a sharp clarinet. It has a very good sound. Usually, I play on a Mitchell Lurie purchased from him in the middle 50's.
