From the description of the R13: .....and it has a fine quality French-made HB ligature that provides a round, centered, and brilliant sound.

So, all you need for a "round, centered, and brilliant sound" is "a fine quality French-made HB ligature"!

VOILA!

Only number 8 is difficult to assemble, thankfully everything else is easy! I don't think I would be able to set up for rehersal in time with 8!

And number 3 has a cylindrical bore! Who would have guessed?

Thanks for a good laugh

Oh wait.. read the "understanding the clarinet" section. It gets even better

Had to laugh, the Buffet R13 had 9 reviews and a 3 star rating! OMG! I guess I'm not the only one completely unhappy with them! So the price of $3200 really means about $4200 after you buy it, it doesn't play, and have to send it in to a good repairman!

Good find Chris!

Sad to read that some military bands have to make do with one clarinet. The budget cuts to military music have been pretty severe here in the UK, but not that bad.

What really worries me though is the writer seems to have exposed an industry scandal of manufacturers passing off sub-scale bass clarinets at full price. It happens in other industries: for example, the "shrinkflation" of chocolate bars which are made smaller but no cheaper. I paid a hefty price for my low C bass, but I'm sure it's way under 9ft long. I'd better go and check...

I hear that an original contra actually stands 18 feet tall. What a ripoff, mine is only 6 feet.

mtom- I'm sure it was only 1/3 the price, or it should have been and you can demand a partial refund.

This is funny and also kind of sad to think of all the parents, students, and perhaps a few who should know better- taking some or all of it seriously. Not that there isn't a bit of nonsense here and there on this forum (some of which I have contributed).

I also note that whenever I see something in news or on cable TV about which I know a great deal, it usually is lacking in accuracy or understanding of reality. Some better than others, it isn't 100% tripe. But somehow when I'm hearing some subject I know not much about, I'm perhaps too accepting of the content, especially if sounds halfway rational (tripe often does). Dare I mention politics?- sorry. So I can't completely blame those parents and students. The writer, however... grrrrrr.

I've spent almost $300.00 in repairs and adjustment on my NEW R13/greenline since late March, that was selected by me and setup by a great dealer. Still needs some work, at least another $200, I just keep finding little stuff wrong ... I like the R13 acoustics and glow (a lot, sorry guys!) for my playing style, but Buffet's final fit and finish sucks swamp water. Mine just got out of the shop this week, after 21 days away.

In contrast, I have a Yamaha 650 that is a year old, cost 40% of the Buffet, and has never been touched from the time it left the factory, and doesn't need ANYTHING done to it! It's sitting in front of me now ...

I've only had minor repairs done to my Ridenour clarinets in over 5 years ...

I suggested, to the repair technician, that Buffet should just outsource their production to Yamaha. I got a smile and a nod of agreement ...

If I could just get a CSVR in a composite ... it's R13ish enough ... and better in tuning and evenness ...

Tom

Seeing as Yamaha offer the YCL-450NM with a sleeved top joint bore, why not offer that on high end models like they do with their 400 (cast resin lining) and 800 (ebonite sleeved) Duet+ series oboes?

Bushed toneholes only go so far to preventing cracks running across them when they do crack, but lining the top joint bore adds further durability.

That's a much better compromise than an entirely synthetic top joint as it's the best of both worlds - the tensile strength of wood (especially the middle tenon which is notoriously weak on synthetic instruments) and the imperviousness of the synthetic sleeve.

A better compromise still with be a tenon that is reinforced with carbon fiber winding cast in epoxy. Could be done very efficiently with an automated spool. Why bother with expensive, unreliable wood.

Tom S - 21 days to wait for a few hours work is an unreasonable turn around time in my opinion.

Only the top four are of any significance - the rest from 5 to 9 are pretty much the same thing, so it's really a Top 5.
