Buffet Premium vs. Buffet Prodige Clarinet
Author: brusted

I've found out that Buffet Crampon has now a new clarinet model by the name of Prodige. Buffet Prodige Student Clarinet. From the looks of it, the clarinet seems very promising and I so I wanted to purchase it. The problem is is that I cannot find any American vendors that sell this clarinet; all that I can find is the Buffet Premium Student Clarinet online for sale.

I figured that the Buffet Student Premium Clarinet is just the American version of the Buffet Prodige Student Clarinet (considering the fact that they look somewhat similar) but I am not sure. Does anyone know if this is so? If not so, how do I go about obtaning a Prodige? Given that I live in America.

I would be very leary of wanting to buy a model of clarinet based on the manufacturer's blurb.

It might well happen to be a decent instrument, but at the same time not at all suitable for your needs.

Try before you buy is always the safest mantra.

Because of marketing reasons, in US the Prodige is only sold at brick and mortar band instrument stores, not on line, viceversa the Premium is only sold on line and not in local stores. Price is the same, clarinets are the same with three differences: Prodige has hard case, leather pads, nickel plated keys. Premium has soft case, skin pads, Silver plated keys. I am thinking about buying a Premium (even if I would prefer leather pads) because on line stores have much better prices than local shops.

Here's the story on that Clarinet:

Premium is the one to get - it has Silver plated Keys and comes in a Bam Case.

The Prodige is the exact same Clarinet, except that it doesn't have Silver plated keys, comes in a much less quality case, and the pads aren't the premium ones that the Premium comes with.

I have students with both........

Prodige is Retail Store only, and the Premium is online store only.

Also, I think that the description is incorrect - (going by memory) that the Premium has the better leather pads also!

So the Prodige has the skin pads.

Both are Polycylindrical instead of the straight bore of the B-12 that it replaced. That bore is found on the more expensive models.

Personally, I have a Backun Alpha as my synthetic material Clarinet, and it is great.

If you want the Protige with the leather pads and nickel keys, Kessler Music in Nevada has them.

Their website is https://www.kesslermusic.com . Talk directly to Dave Kessler because I couldn't find the Protige on their website.

I talked to Dave recently and he gave me the total story.

I just talked with Kessler Music. The Protige comes in a durable plastic case NOT a BAM case. The Premium comes in a backpack case.

So to sum up:

Protige:
1) Nickel keys
2) White leather pads
3) Durable plastic case
4) Sold only in stores
5) New bore based on E13

Premium:
1) Silver keys
2) Double bladder pads
3) Backpack case
4) Sold only Online
5) New bore based on E13 model

For more information: https://www.kesslerandsons.com/product/buffet-premium-student-clarinet/

I hope this clears up any confusion.
