 Musicians affected by Harvey
Author: Ursa

After the Hurricane Katrina disaster, organizations, such as Music Rising, sprang up to get musical equipment into the hands of musicians in need.

Has anyone heard anything about efforts to do the same once recovery begins with the Harvey disaster? I would gladly donate some good used gear.

Ursa,

Not sure who will have the time here. Most will be too busy trying to survive for a few weeks. I will say that if you want to donate an instrument I'll see that it gets in someone's hands who needs it. My home and workshop, fortunately, stayed dry. Water got up to the foundation of the house on my west end but nothing came into the home. I've tried to contact those in my customer base in the area and most can not be contacted at this time. Those that I have are doing okay. Some have had to go to shelters and others unscathed. It's just where you live, if you live around a bayou or other watershed, and how high the home builder raised the level of the home in the subdivision if you got water. Then the factor of tornadoes hasn't been mentioned on TV but I know several people whose homes were hit by a tornado or really high straight line winds and lost roofs. You know, of course, what happens when there's not a roof and it rains. It's really bad out there. I, for example, am okay but can not go anywhere because even the surrounding surface streets are still flooded.

Rich Hawley ended up evacuating yesterday. His clarinets were with him

How much of Texas has been affected by the hurricane?

Reason I'm asking is I have relatives in northeast Texas (near Tyler) and their house was trashed by the recent tornado, so hope they're safe. I haven't heard from them as their internet is down, so fingers crossed they're not going to be hit for the 2nd time by another natural disaster this year.

So ironic that many New Orleans residents escaped the flooding from Hurricane Katrina by evacuating to Houston. I watched the storm and the flood from a Houston hotel room, returned to New Orleans after the water had drained off, and saw the local damage first hand only after a safe return.

I can say that the current members of the clarinet sections for the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet orchestras have not had any damage to our instruments. We all live close to downtown and are not in flood zones. However, many of the other members of the orchestra as well as members of Houston Symphony live in areas of the city that have been affected.

We are fortunate in that this hit before the season started. The flooding in the basement level of the Wortham Center did not affect any of our possessions as we took them all out at the end of last season.

The first rehearsal of the season is scheduled for Thursday of this week, but I just got word that all services for this week have been cancelled. If I hear from anyone needing help, I'll be sure to give an update.

Good to hear. I heard that the Wortham got hit again. So sorry to hear about all the damage in the theater district.

I am very grateful for how minimally Harvey affected my life especially compared to the thousands who have lost so much.

From a company email, I am told that the damage to Wortham is minimal. There is some superficial damage to the main stage. Many of the props and costumes for upcoming productions were move to upper floors where they are safe. The biggest challenge seems to be restoring the basement. I understand it is completely underwater. From the pictures and video I have seen, I believe it.

I was also just told that the first ballet rep has been cancelled. They are trying to reschedule the dates but it will take some time before Wortham is usable. The second rep and the upcoming operas are still a go.

Other clarinetists we know of in Houston are Mark Nuccio who left New York
to become principal clarinet in the Houston Symphony and Chester Rowell (Chetclarinet) who has often posted here.

I just received a text from Chester and he's fine for now. Like me, water got close but not in his home. He's got electricity back on.

Tyler is on the "dry" side of Harvey. I expect they're getting some wind and perhaps some rain but should be okay.

Thanks for that - my mum has since heard from my aunt (they're sisters), so they're fine. But they still have plenty of rebuilding to do after the tornado.

I'm more interest how to help Rockport ISD that had that the eye of Harvey cross over the town and caused almost complete devastation. The HS is in ruins. Thoughts on how to help those students?
Communities like Aranas Pass, Port Aransas and Ingleside (where I live and my old alma mater) also had severe damage to their campasses and band halls.

True. Also Fulton, Port Lavaca, etc. So many. Plus now Beaumont/Port Arthur area. The devastation is widespread. I'm sure there are places in between as well such as Winnie, Crosby, Industrial ISD. Wharton is under siege from the San Bernard. A friend of mine there had flooding up past is first story roof and had to be evacuated by the game warden. There will be a wide spread need for many instruments.
