Dr. Richard Shillea is a recent addition to the faculty at the Hartt School. In addition to his studio there, he directs the honors Chamber Music program. He has also been a member of the Juilliard Pre-College faculty for a number of years and conducted the Wind Ensemble there. He is an exceptional teacher, as well as a very active clarinetist.

Glad to hear that. Wasn't the former Clarinet professor (& Symphony Principal in Hartford?) the one who wrote the Rose 23 Etudes "Study Guide" ? I really enjoy his commentary/writings. Seems that I read where he had recently passed away. Thanks for the info.
Best,
mw

I attended Hartt a number of years ago. I can't say too much in detail about the current situation there, but it has always had a good reputation. It is a fine school. I recently took some summer courses there and was very impressed. (I would consider going there for my Doctorate if I had the $!) Good staff, small enough to get personal attention. On clarinet, Charlie Russo has been there for a number of years. The teacher that mw refers to above was Henry Larsen, who was my teacher there. He did write the Rose Study guide (available from Sneezy sponsor VanCott Music books). This is an excellent resource as a guide for the Rose. He walks you through various technical and musical things, uncovering the purpose behind these etudes. It is much like taking a lesson on them. In fact, it is much in the style of taking lessons with Larsen- insightful, knowledgeable, yet very personable. This book should be an addition to everyone's library. And yes, I am sad to say that mw is correct, Henry Larsen passed away about a month ago.

At peabody i know that Steve Barta, principal clarinet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra teaches there and i believe Loren Kitt, principal of the National Symphony Orchestra, teaches there too. My friend will be attending Peabody next year.

I go to peabody. Steve Barta principle of the Baltimore symphony and my teacher is there. Ed Palanker who is the bass clarinetist with the Baltimore symphony teaches there as well. Loren Kitt use to teach there but left and Anthony gigglioti took his place.
I like studying with Barta a lot. I like a lot of his ideas. He studied with both Marcelus (excuse my spelling), and Harold Wright. I think it is sometimes interesting to hear the other ideas in clarinet playing from the other two teachers.
I am just an undergrad, but the conducting students i have talked to say good things about Gustav Meyer.

I studied with Gigliotti, and found him to be an excellent teacher. While I don't know Steve Barta's teaching personally, I know him and his playing very well. He's an excellent player, and is very articulate. We've discussed some of his teaching ideas, and I think he would be an excellent teacher.
I have a former student who went to Hartt to study with Charles Russo, and he worked wonders for her playing.
