When reading note names, e.g. B4, E5, G6, what exactly do the numbers refer to?

Wow. I've been in a lot of forums and you folks take the trophy for quick responses. When do you find time to play?
OK, middle C, C4, is the lodestone, but I'm a bit confused by the diagram of "Ten Cs in scientific pitch notation" that shows "C2" and "C3" each below an A.
Can someone explain this to me?

The numbering starts with C - that is, the first note of each numbered octave is C, not A. So starting on C4 ("middle" C) the notes are C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4, C5 (3rd space up on the treble staff). I first thought it was illogical to do it this way, but I eventually came to accept it. I guess it's because Do (Ut) in the "fixed" Do system of scale names is the tonic note of the "white note" scale.

What you say makes perfect sense to me - thanks for explaining. But I still don't understand why, in the diagram
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_pitch_notation ,
the notations "C2" and "C3" are each shown directly below an A on the staff. Now it just occurred to me that the left half of the diagram is a bass clef, the right a treble clef. It's been 50 years since I've played music and I'm in the process of relearning. Thanks again.

Yes those are both C in bass clef. In bass clef the C marked C3 is an octave below the middle C marked C4 right under the staff in treble clef.
