I use a Rovner ligature and its got the darkest sound out of all the ligatures I have. With my Greg Smith mouthpiece everything sounds too bright and I'm one of those people who's all for that dark mellow clarinet sound. I can't find one, my teacher told me to try the Eddie Daniels or something like that, but I wanted to get you guys opinion before I went to the music store to try em out. Thanks!

Well, you're definitely not out of money for trying things out. I use the Eddie Daniels II Rovner ligature and I just LOVE it! It gives me the dark tone that seems just "velvety", but it also has metal plates and plastic rails on the inside to help with the articulation. Some problems with other rovners is they don't promote good articulation and the sounds gets "stuffy". Not so with me and my Rovner.
Check it out. I think you'll be impressed yourself.

There is huge discussion I seem to have started a couple days ago on ligatures - you might want to check it out too
Basically, it got me thinking that I probably will be getting a Rovner, once I have money again.

After trying many ligatures sold by big manufacturers, I decided to use this cupper ligature hand-made by a small shop in Tokyo.

Very fast response and deep and firm sounds by the heavy mass of cupper.

I'm not looking for just any ligature, but thanks for the suggestions, which by the way I have been the reading hte posts to the thread; I'm looking specifically for a dark ligature. Thanks!

I have always been looking for a dark sound, which I now have.
I play a Buffet DG (which has a dark sound), with a Vandoren B40 (fairly open tip, which, in my opinion and the opinion of my instructor, facilitate a dark sound), AND.... a Rovner "Dark" Ligature (no metal plates), which I love and will never change.
In addition, using Lègere reeds (3.50; 3.75) instead than the regular cane Vandoren reeds, can give me an even darker and mellow sound.
All the rest, then, depends on your embouchure and air stream production.

Well just about all my stuff has bright sounds, I've got a buffet Festival. a Rovner dark, and a greg smith kasper so, with all this bright stuff I want to get a ligature to help tone it down a bit.

My son plays a Festival, uses Greg Smith's Chedeville 1+ mouthpiece, and a Peter Spriggs floating rail lig. He has a nice dark sound. It's even darker when he plays double lip, but his teacher is having him play single lip. He is one of those individuals that can switch back and forth when the need arises.
