 Buffet B12 Bell
Author: wolframthurman

I recently bought a Buffet B12 second hand and I noticed the Bell doesn't have a silver rim, which I'm pretty sure it should have. Was there ever a design change for the b12? The logo on the bell looks normal but very faded. The serial number starts 48XXXX. Could it be a fake?

They kept changing things on the B12 - the early ones had a metal bell ring, then the next ones in the early '90s didn't and the ones after that from the late '90s had a metal coated plastic bell ring.

I also have just bought an old B12 (number is 49......) and it has no silver ring either. The embossed logo is quite clear but there is no 'made in Germany/ west Germany'. Does yours?
A very kind poster here said that perhaps there was no 'made in..'because it was produced around the fall of the wall, and people were not sure what the status of the two Germanies would be. I don't know.
My little B12 plays quite well (I bought it in a charity shop for playing outside) and it is very light, just right for student fingers...

B12s, E10s and E11s made and sold for the European market never had 'Made in W. Germany' or 'Made in Germany' stamped on them (before and after Reunification) - the Evette clarinets before them did (Made in W. Germany), but not the ones after that.

That's funny - another poster says that his does say that. Come what may, I am perfectly happy with mine...
Chris, what year do you think it was made?

Has it got a metal or plastic thumbrest?

There used to be a serial number database/search engine for B&H, Buffet and Schreiber woodwinds (the B12 being Schreiber) which was a brilliant resource and was the most accurate found anywhere online (especially for B&H woodwinds), but that went by the wayside when the B&H group folded.

I can only guess it was made around the early to mid '90s, but can't be any more specific. I remember all the new B12s had serial numbers in the 300000s in the late '80s.

Chris, those models that come here are mostly the "European" ones and they usually have "Made in Germany" on them.

Maybe it's a mainland Europe thing for them not to carry the country of origin on them.

I've never seen any B12s or E11s sold in the UK stamped with the country of origin - just the serial number.

Even the B&H Regent II (just before they became the B12) doesn't have 'Made in W. Germany' on it, but the Evettes before did.
