 Pad Cup Torch
Author: Bill

I'm looking for recommendations as to what type torch to buy for heating pad cups for seating pads. I use an alcohol lamp for flute pads. Is this okay for clarinet pads? The Ferree's Tools catalog has mini and micro butane torches. Would the micro torch be okay, considering that I do pad work infrequently? The also have a high heat blow gun for sax and flute pads (doesn't mention clarinet).

I use an acetylene "B" tank and dental torch for applying cement to pads or pad cups. However, to seat the pad I use the Votaw pad cup heater. Votaw "reboxes" it and markets it as his own, but have discovered it can be purchased from Micromark for about $40 cheaper without the fancy box. I find I have better control of heat and there isn't a chance of accidentally burning a pad.

Thanks John: I found a review (with picture) of the Votaw pad cup heater in Issue 5 of the Woodwind Quarterly. Looks perfect for this and other tasks such a "frozen" screw removal. Now for the price.

The only torch you need or should consider is the L60 torch from Ferree's... ferreestools.com or email order ferreestools@aol.com it is all you need for woodwind work and is about $17

I'm glad to hear about the L60 torch. After lots of thought and looking at alternatives, I ordered the L60 from Ferree's last Friday. I was debating between the L60 and L56 for $52.50, but after talking to a Ferree's rep went with the L60.

I have to confess that I ordered the Triton soldering tool yesterday, and it arrived today. Still waiting for the L60, but it has further to travel.
