According to Alcides Rodriguez's Facebook page (July 11), Afendi Yusuf is the new principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Yusuf was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the Canadian Opera Orchestra, and he studied at the Colburn School with Yehuda Gilad. Is this correct? Anybody know more?

I got to know Afendi a little bit this past year, since USC shares a studio with Colburn. He's an awesome musician and clarinetist, congrats to him!

He was at Colburn when I was in 2014. That information is correct.

He'll be in the "Robert Marcellus Principal Clarinet Endowed Chair" in Cleveland
Still under 30, he will have plenty of time to grow in the orchestra and take his place in the lineage of Marcellus, Schifrin, and Cohen. I'm looking forward to hearing him.

CONGRATS..but i give him bout a year! The turnover in Cleveland has been quite high for about ten years. I think these are all very relative..i am quite sure he plays quite nice..etc. al..but the long term picture changes for orchestral players over long term..Marcellus did about 18 years...that is average.

Marcellus quit for health reasons, diabetes, didn't he? And Frank Cohen remained for nearly 40 years (starting in 1976). So why do you project just a year for Yusuf?

Have watched the way things have gone on in Cleveland..they made appointments..etc al. The business has very little to do with how you play..more about what management thinks and the image they project. It is all really sad...it is now just a business.

I believe I recall reading that he has studied with Joaquin Valdepenas. A very respected name in the Canadian clarinet world, not sure how well known he is in other places.

I agree with J.J.; he will last. Over the past couple years, while looking to fill the position, Cleveland made interim appointments, that really had little chance of becoming long term. Afendi Yusuf is not just another interim appointment. Looking forward to him being a long term fixture with the orchestra.
