Does anyone know who else was in the finals for the Philadelphia Orchestra Principal clarinet job when Burt Hara won the position or Ricardo Morales won the position?

I'm 90% sure Richie Hawley did a Philadelphia audition while I was at CCM but I couldn't say exactly when- 1997/98? (maybe 96? But I think later) I recall that he played the Mozart concerto to us as part of his preparation. Dn

I can't remember but I'm pretty sure it was by invitation only by that time so probably lots of well known players. On a somewhat unrelated funny story, when Ricardo was prepared his audition he called me and asked me to listen to some excerpts and give him my opinion, he had studied with me as a teenager for 5-6 summers. While he was playing for me I needed to switch phones for better reception and accidentally turned off the phone. I had to wait several minutes for him to call back and ask what happened, we had a good laugh and he played the excerpts again. i gave him a 100% on his playing, well duh, he was and is a great player. I don't remember if I made any suggestions at all, if I did it would have been a pretty small one. Something like play it faster, louder and better.:-) (That was actually a quote from a conductor I heard said many years ago).
I consider him as my unofficial 4th son. :-)

Yes - I was one of the players who was scheduled to Audition, but got sick (Flu) 3 weeks before it, and there were a few excerpts that were really, **really** obscure that I had to learn, so I tapped out.
That was when Burt won it.
I had replaced Anthony Gigliotti that Summer (1996) at the FAME Princeton Festival as the Clarinet Faculty.
Anthony Mcgill was another favorite to win, but not sure if he auditioned (I do think that he did though). Michael Rusinek Auditioned (that I recall), I think Richard Hawkins also did. Another Finalist was from the Boston Sym/Boston Pops Tom Martin. Some of my best students went on to study with Tom.
It was December/Jan of 1996 that Burt won it.
