 Buffet egg-shaped bell
Author: gatto

The bore of the bell of the RC Prestige is "egg-shaped". I always thought this is somehow one of the main features of the RC family. (So as to extend the conical part of the lower joint.) But I don't see egg-shape mentioned in any description of the RC. I never saw an RC in reality. Hence my question:

Does the plain RC also have this egg-shaped bell, or not? Has this changed during the time? (A change of the bell shape design a few years ago is described, but I guess this only concerns the flat bottom surface; this change I can recognize on my own RC Prestige A, in comparison to my older RC Prestige Bb.)

And since the Divine is also said to belong to the RC bore family: what about the bell of the Divine?

I'm playing a new RC (not Prestige) Bb clarinet which I bought last year. I also read something about an egg-shaped bore, but couldn't really see anything there. Nevertheless, it sounds beautiful :)

The most recent RC clarinets no longer have the chambered bell. The early ones didn't have that either - I think it was a late '80s or early '90s thing which lasted until fairly recently. Yamaha 250 clarinets have chambered bells.

They (the standard/non-Prestige RC) also have a metal badge set into the top joint like Prestige models.

The DG Prestige had a chambered barrel - there was a groove cut about half the way down the barrel bore in these.

Do you know the reason why they did that? should it sound like some kind of clarinette d'amour?

It's to add resonance to the E/B and possibly some other notes.

Yeah - you can swap parts from one to the other as the only difference between the standard and Prestige RC are cosmetic as the Prestige has unstained wood, metal badge on the top joint, metal tenon rings, LH Ab/Eb lever as standard and a more expensive case.

Conversely, I tried the ICON bell with my RC Prestige B-flat. The ICON bell is not chambered. I find the sound quite good. (Together with an ICON barrel my B-flat becomes almost 40 gr lighter than with the original stuff.)

I played on RCs and RC Prestiges for a long time from various periods. In all the Prestiges I disliked the chambered bell design and always found to be an improvement when I put a regular bell on them. The C and B were much more focused and resonant with the traditional design. Usually the difference was somewhat bigger on Bbs.
