 recording self

Maybe this topic has been covered before (Search wasn't very forthcoming for me), but an update might at least be worthwhile.

I wish to record myself playing clarinet, both audio and video. It doesn't have to be professional quality. My goals are to a) hear and observe myself a different way, and b) post vids online to supplement comments I might make here or elsewhere.

I'm running Windows 10 on a PC. I have an adequate camera and microphone that connect and work. What I don't have is an application to make and save the recordings with.

Windows 10 has a "Camera" app built in, but after a half second of my playing the recorded volume reduces by about 50%. That effect repeats each time I pause and resume. I've fiddled settings for the app, the drivers, the computer, and the OS to my wit's end and googled to no avail. It does seem to be the app, since the little demos Skype lets one record don't cause the same problem. Otherwise, "Camera" would be fine, so if anyone knows a fix please let me know.

I've tried a couple other apps available online that seemed fine, but they only offer trial periods and then require purchase. That's probably what I'll end up doing, but first I'd like to know people's recommendations, if any.

You could try recording only video with the windows camera app, then download audacity (a free and pretty extensive audio recording application) and record the audio with that. Then you would have to match the audio and video recordings in some sort of editing software. This isn't very convinient, but if you can't find any other programs then I'd say try it.

I'd like to know specifically what your camera and mic make and model are before making any other suggestions.

I don't have any experience with video but I would second using Audacity for audio. It's free and user friendly.

No experience with video recording, but for audio I am very happy with my Zoom recorder.

I use my iPhone sitting on a Tripod with a Shure MV88 attached to it.

Very portable and super simple.

Merlin: here's what it says on the devices I have plugged in.

Camera - Logitech 720p

Microphone - 500-ohm Uni-directional Dynamic Microphone

I don't know the microphone brand.
