 Mouthpieces
Author: ClairGirl

I am currently playing on an R-13 with a moennig barrel and using a hite "d" mouthpiece. The facing, when measured, is slightly uneven. I get a wonderful sound from this mouthpiece, despite the irregularity, but I find my intonation has been terrible since I have been using it. I have also found the sound is less centered than I would like it to be. I dont' like either extremes of a closed or open mouthpiece, is there anyone who could suggest a good mouthpiece to test for my setup?

Greg Smith's mouthpieces are supurb. His info is available in the "sponsers" section of this board and easy to work with--I speak from personal experiance. Good clarineting!!!!!

ClairGril..
I also was playing on a Moenning barrel....R-13, and Hite D mouthpiece and loving it all....However I dod switch very easily to the Smith...I did however switch to a Caddash Barrel...it plays better for me with the caddash barrell......However..I have also heard many good things about the Forbes Mpc...so try both...but it wil be a good switch....
the aspects of tone and focous that you are getting on the Hite will only be easier to obtain on the smith of forbes mps'c.....Do try them both...it'll take a while to find the great mouthpiece, but all your research will pay off in the long run....

I have played on a Greg Smith mp. My college clarinet teacher rejected it :( and said I should go for the Vandoren 5RVLyre. This might not be for you, however, it has made a world of difference for me! I have a bigger sound and I am much happier. IMHO, a "name" doesn't always solve the problem. But, look around and see what works for you.

It is known sometimes reverse taperd barrel needs a shorter length than the stock barrel. Why not consult with Mr.Hite as to this matter and facing?

I agree with William, I play on a Greg Smith mouthpiece and they are simply fantastic. If you are thinking of buying one of Greg's mouthpieces make sure to try as many as possible.

I still prefer my Vandoren M13. There are other variations on this mouthpiece from Vandoren - the "13" series. You might want to check them out. They were made to complement the R-13.

The band directors in my city require the M13Lyre for their clarinet sections. It was designed (thus the 13) for the R-13 clarinet. The M13 Lyre (as compared to the M13) is a bit more open and easier blowing with a nice, warm tone and excellent altisimo. Many people like it and see no need to purchase more expensive mouthpieces. However, I use Bays, Smiths and Kaspars without regret over the expense.
