 Ligatures
Author: Azzacca

I have always used the standard ligature (the kind that screws on the reed side). Has anyone a different preference? Just wondering if that would help me in any way :)

Thanks!

I currently like the VanDoren Optimum with the two parallel rails (Bonade reverse copy)

I use currently a Bonade inverted ligature. Knowing its faults and desireable qualities I've decided to stick with it. I tried many weird things in place of ligatures in the past. Such examples are tape, rubberbands and those things that come with the hefty bags. They actually work remarkably well. As far as "real" ligatures, the Legre hand woven ligature probably come close to this, you just slide it right on, no screws. I haven't tried this yet but might order one as the biggest problem I have with my Bonade is the screws stripping, resulting in me buying my third Bonade ligature. There has been a multitude of new ligatures showing up in the stores. The most popular one I have seen being used is the new one by Vandorean, I forget the name. Ted Owen, from the DSO, I've seen using that gold folding ligature that costs alot of money. I've seen them at the woodwind and Brasswind (sorry about that description.) If anyone knows what I'm talking about he tells me it's really good. Cloth ligatures are also popular. I tried an experiment on the cloth ligature and found that they gave me a darker sound but took away from the vibrance of sound. I have a plastic ligature that I aquired with a clarinet. It's not bad but not great either. All in all a ligature is very important in the settup of the clarinet but one must find the best one for their personal taste.

I second Dave. At first I thought Rovners were ugly and weird. But once I tried one, I've never gone back.

I like Bonades for Bbs and alto sax, [also Luybens] and have recently started using a cloth-rubber [cant make out the name] on my bass cl mp which has the right-handed adjusting screw with the gripping rods on the reed [it grips like the Bonade] and find I prefer it to others. Don

My vote goes the Rovner. My sound was always a bit bright and the Rovner tones it down to where I am quite happy with it. There is a loss of vibrance but I mainly play in a symphonic band where the blending the tone from 20+ clarinets is the goal. Reeds also seem to play longer.

I used to gig with a tenor player who used a hose clamp off a car. Sounded great.
Winslows are OK but expensive. Rovners are good. Experiment with not only the little metal plates that come with them (as in the Eddie Daniels model) but also with the vertical placment.

I've tried the Mitchell Lurie Springboard, Bonade, Vandoren Optimum, BG Revelation, various Rovners, and string.

I liked string the best overall, but had some difficulty keeping it stable and usable over long periods of time. I'm currently using the Rovner 1R-ED and 1R-ED2 models (the old and new "Eddie Daniels" endorsed models with the little metal plates). While I really liked the feel of the Bonade, the metal snapped on me after being flexed too many times. The metal plates on the new Rovner ED models is pretty close to the same feel, thus...

I expected the Optimum to behave similarly to the Bonade with the parallel rail plate, but was somewhat disappointed in what it did for me (so, try it our for yourself and see if it works for you =).

I'm currently using a Pyne woven but it's
getting a little stretched out after a few
months. They're a bit expensive to keep replacing
but I like the sound. Didn't know Legere had
a woven?? Where can I order one and how is the
price? Thanks!

Do you put tape on the back of your mp to avoid
the back screw "cutting" ito the mp and making
a groove????? There is that little "flap" over part
of the screw but that doesn't help.

BG Super Revelation is what I use but the best idea is to try as many as you possibly can to see which works better with your setup.

I lined up a bunch on the counter at the music store a while back. After about an hour of going back and forth, I finaly settled on the one I came in with, an old Harrison lig.

Just got a new Rovner EDll and it sounds great (still checking out the difference w/wo the steel plates. I'm disappointed that the cover does not fit the MP with this lig. Anyone else have this problem?

I use an inverted Bonade ligature. I have found this to be the best so far and I am eagerly anticipating to try out a Vandoren Optimum Ligature.

I can't let this discussion go on without putting in a plug for Peter Spriggs' Floating Rail ligature. I tried lots, and this is now the only one I use.

I remember a few years ago I spent several hours reconditioning Richard Stolzman's clarinet while he sat next to me watching and conversing as I worked. When I was finished and handed him his horn he took out his mpce, selected a reed and then took out a very horrible looking standard issue $3 ligature that was encrusted with various shades of green and worse... I told him I had a varied selection of ligatures in stock and asked him if he would like to try some... he responded "No, this one is just fine, all it has to do is hold the reed on."

Just a normal stock vandoren lig that is black and screws up on the other side to the reed. Seems to work great on Greg Smith Mp for four of us here.

I suspect ligature choice is driven mainly by fashion.

My personal favorite are the old Kaspar ligatures. There's something about the metal that no other ligature i've ever played can match. The best ligature currently on the market that i've played has been the Peter Spriggs Floating Rails.
A few years ago, Leblanc was supposed to be making a copy of the Kaspar ligatures because Richard Hawkins had found a box of unfinished ligs. But i guess that plan got scratched. But seeing the quality control problems with the Bonades, it's probably just as well.
