Battle of the Plastic Clairinets

So I'm in need of advice.

I'm a sophomore in high school and have been playing on my trusty Selmer 1400 since the 4th grade. It's been through 5 years of lessons and various band ensembles in my schools and a year of marching band. Now, I've seemingly acquired a used Armstrong 4001. After not doing concert band last year, I'm ready to do both concert and marching band this year. But here's my question, from the information online, both are good student instruments. After a trip to a music center the Armstrong should be in good shape. I'm still on the hinge about what clairinet should do what duty, I mean... Both are plastic. So I guess I'm wondering which is better and or which one should be used as the marching band beater? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, R. J.:

The Selmer 1400 was designed with outdoors use in mind. The springs, pivot screws, and rods are stainless steel for corrosion resistance. The Armstrong lacks this feature. If there's any chance your clarinet could get exposed to rain, snow, water sprinklers, dank locker rooms, and the like out on the job, you'll want to use the Selmer.

When it's time to have the Selmer serviced, you might want to investigate having cork and/or Valentino pads installed. Both will further enhance the weather-resistance of your clarinet.

Anybody serious about the clarinet needs a worry-free instrument for outdoors. A Selmer 1400, when properly maintained and set up properly, can be a very nice solution.

I have a Bundy 1400 and it is quite nice ... they keywork fits me perfectly! My finger technique really benefits using this clarinet ... if my Buffet or Ridenour just had the same feel! I guess I still have "student hands" ...
