M30 Lyre equivalent in Zinner rubber
Author: rmason

Hi All

I recently tried a number of Vandoren M30 lyre mpieces and I was very impressed with its centre, response, intonation. It felt like coming home. However I love the properties that the Zinner rubber imparts to a mpiece. Are there any makers who make a similar facing, chamber etc to the M30 lyre using Zinner blanks?

There are so many mouthpiece makers in the States, and given the expense and time to import mouthpieces for trial into Australia, any leads from colleagues in the States would be very much appreciated. Richard.

Greg Smith, Mike Lomax, Richard Hawkins, Clark Fobes, Walter Grabner, and David McLune are some of several mouthpiece makers who use a Zinner blank for all or most of their offerings. The Backun MoBa mouthpieces are probably based on a Zinner blank as well. These makers usually specify a particular type of blank especially for them from Zinner before they add the finishing touches, including further re-boring, facings, and work on the tone chamber and baffle.

Any of these mouthpiece makers can tell you which of their models is closest to the M30 if you contact them directly.

Brad Behn (in addition to mouthpieces based on his own proprietary blanks) also still has a Zinner model, and he would put a facing and other finishing on a Zinner blank for you to approximate the qualities of the M30 if you request that.

All these makers are easy to find and contact on the Internet.

Another option is to buy a Zinner blank ($86) from Muncy Winds and have your favorite mouthpiece tech add an M30 facing. Talk to Muncy and the tech about which of the three Zinner model blanks to buy.

Hi Richard,

Clark Fobes has a model that is similar to the M30, the "Europa 2". He might have something similar to the M30 Lyre. He's a super guy:

The M30-lyre is a winner, IMHO. Used one for quite a while ... a non-13 series, so a 67 mm barrel is a must ...

I would also suggest contacting Clark. He is great to work with and makes terrific mouthpieces. He could definitely suggest some good options.

His Europa mouthpieces are terrific. I'd pick Clark's stuff (and Behn) over anything Vandoren. (But I have a jaded impression of Vandoren like Buffet.)

the M30 and M30 lyre are the best vandoren offer..the m30 D is something of a dud as it plays so stuffy

Vandoren blanks are pretty nice...

Again, it is all personal. I much prefer the M13 lyre
